CENTRAL Park NYC/ Fall Foliage?

Around what dates do the leaves turn on the trees in Central Park and around NYC please?

Danielle Aug 4th, 2000 11:58 AM

I live in the NYC area and the leaves around here are in full autumn swing by midOctober.

Queenie Aug 4th, 2000 03:36 PM

Thanks Danielle. :)

Nano Aug 5th, 2000 03:57 AM

I visited NY two years straight and Oct 22 the leaves had fallen already. I saw maybe one tree with pretty colors in Central Park.

If you want to see real foliage in the NYC area in mid- to late-October, rent a car and drive about an hour or so up to and thru the Hudson Valley. It's magnificent that time of the year.

Danielle Aug 5th, 2000 08:19 AM

Yeah, the time the leaves change is dependent on the weather the summer before. This summer we've had a lot of rain!!! :( so the leaves won't fall off early (as Nano says, by the end of October the foiliage is often off, especially when we have little rain), but mid october is a good bet this year. And Howard's right about the Hudson Valley- absolutely gorgeous!

So does the week of October 9th sound better or the week of the 16th - to see prettier foliage? Or this year could it even be the week of the 23rd? :-) I'll be going to Cape Cod also. How do I get to the Hudson Valley? I'll be renting a car in NYC. DO I get to the Hudson Valley via the Henry Hudson Parkway? Sorry for the ignorant question, but I've never seen fall foliage, only in pics. Thanks

I wish I could help, but based on the responses, sounds like they mean that the more rain they have in the summer (which they have had), the later in the fall the leaves change. Translation: I would venture to guess anywhere between October 10-25. Am I right gang?

Why would you go to NYC to see fall foliage? Why would you go to an urban area to see nature?

Harold Mines Aug 5th, 2000 11:04 AM

I think her point is that she wants to see foliage and she's gonna be in NYC and was wondering if she'd get to see it in NYC. From there she'll obviously find it on her way to Mass.

Queenie?

Queenie Aug 5th, 2000 11:30 AM

I may go on to New Hampshire or Vermont or even Maine, but yes, that is what I'm saying.

Thanks for clarifying...hope you have a great trip. Report back on when and where you saw the most beautiful sights!

Danielle Aug 5th, 2000 03:53 PM

Yeah, Paul's right, though the 25th might be a little late. Queenie, I think either week you'll see some good foliage but I'd try the ninth.

Queenie Aug 5th, 2000 03:57 PM

I think the 9th is Columbus Day and everything is packed, so I'll opt for the 10th. I can only hope they stay pretty through the 16th, which is when I depart. Thank you so very much for letting me know.

Fall foliage season usually peaks in around the second week of October in the counties north of NYC and at the very end of October and beginning of November in NYC.

To visit the Hudson Valley take any of several highways to the Taconic Parkway and drive north. Hyde Park (the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt mansions) might be a good destination.
WhatIS Aug 7th, 2000 02:36 PM

What does "peak" mean. Is it that the flowers have reached their brightest colors respectively or that they will no longer change from the colors they are?

Autumn Aug 7th, 2000 03:18 PM

Flowers? How do flowers enter into this question? I think we're talking colors of deciduous trees. Peak is the point where these hues are the most vivid before losing brightness and falling from the tree.

Queenie Aug 8th, 2000 05:02 AM

Obviously I meant leaves. Thanks. I get it now.
