Cell Phone Service

We're headed on an Alaskan Cruise (Inside Passage) and will need to be in touch with home office while away. Can anyone provide some insight to cell coverage in inside passage cruise routes?

We just returned from Alaska and found that they have their own cell coverage there that does not accommodate many of the companies in the lower 48 states. We have Verizon service and were only able to use our phone in the immediate Anchorage area. We were in Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, Homer and Girdwood and we were out of luck. We couldn't even roam in those areas. In Anchorage, Verizon does offer service on an expanded network, but you do not pay roaming charges. I hope this helps.

Inside passage will have service in Juneau and Ketchikan. but you can also access the internet free at each library. Your ship should also have internet access.

We just got back from an Inside Passage cruise and our nationwide Cingular service didn't work anywhere in Alaska. We finally got service about a half hour before we docked in Vancouver!

Verizon only worked in Anchorage (we were there this past May)...had no luck at any of the previous ports. Luckily there are pay phones right outside of every port so calls to the office should be easy to take care of.
