Cedar Key, Florida
 

Has anyone stayed at any b&b's or hotels on Cedar Key Florida? Would this be a good place for a honeymoon? We want scenic, quiet and romantic. Need recommendations quick.<BR>Thanks,<BR><BR>Pat

I have been to Cedar Key many times, but never stayed there. It is a very remote, southern town on the gulf about an hour from Gainesville. I would say that it is scenin, very quiet, and could be romantic. Hopefully you are going in the summer as it gets quite cold there in the winter.

Can't help with your B&B question, but there is absolutely nothing in Cedar Key that can't be seen in an afternoon. It's very *very* remote--nothing within 1-1/2 hours... A few cute shops, yes it's on the gulf, but no beach that we saw. You might look at Anna Maria Island or Siesta Key. Both are quiet and lovely with beautiful long walkable beaches, and you're within a 1/2 hour of Sarasota if you want to do any sightseeing.

We stayed at Cedar Key last June for just one night at one of the motels (sorry I can't remember the name. We were looking for inexpensive and that is what we got, but we did have a nice view of the bay. It was a nice change after all the touristy, way overpriced places we had stayed before. It advertises itself as the "real Florida" and we felt it was. We had been warned about the possibility of encountering the stereotypical rural southern "bubba" attitudes, but all we felt was wonderful southern hospitality and were wished "safe journey" by complete strangers. I remember some very nice condominiums at the south end of town and it appeared that there were a couple of nice restaurants (we just picnicked for dinner) in the area. We wished we had had time to take a tour out to the old lighthouse.

We live in central Florida and have used Cedar Key as a weekend getaway a few times. We book a condo on the gulf with a pool. There is not very much in Cedar key unless you have a boat. It is quiet, nice sunsets, some good restaurants. Could be good for an inexpensive honeymoon. There is a small public beach close to the condos.

"quiet" is a nice way describe cedar key....we were in and out of there in about one hour. it might be a good honeymoon spot....if you're both about 65 yrs old.

I had always wanted to go to Cedar Key and we did last summer. Stayed one night. Can't imagine it for a honeymoon. It is beyond quiet. Agree with Anna Marie Island which is delightful. The B&Bs at Cedar Key were not up to honeymoon standards. Keep looking.

We stayed in Cedar Key for one night a couple of years ago. Everyone has it right - there's almost nothing there. No beach to speak of. We had trouble finding a decent restaurant. Sorry to say, we couldn't wait to leave the next day. Why don't you consider Captiva Island? It's a great place! There's a place at the very end of Captiva that's a popular honeymoon spot. I think it's called South Seas Plantation (or used to be). Good luck!

Cedar Key is a perfect weekend getaway vacation. Previous posts are right...you can see everything there in a day. However, if you go at the end of February, you can take part in all the activities of Star Party week. Astronomers from all over the world come to view the skies where there is virtually NO light pollution. They have solar and lunar observatories set up during the day, educational programs, and even if you don't have your own telescope, there are plenty of pros and amateurs there more than happy to share their passion for the skies with you. Bring your binoculars for the stargazing hayride. We went at the beginning of the week to avoid crowds and loved it. Hiking at Shell Mound is also a must. The weather is great that time of year--just warming up into the 60's and maybe 70's. There is a little hotel right on the water called Harbour Master Suites--gorgeous views and true island character. The Island Room is a good place to eat, and the L&amp;M Bar is a good watering hole with pool tables if you don't mind being in a dive.

Faraway Inn is a great place to stay, very charming and different, but you have to love dogs - dogs are practically worshiped there. Now as for Cedar Key in general, my impression is that artists, so-called 'gypsy' types, introverts, orphans, adoptees, single people - all these people are embraced and it is refreshing to know they have a place to go - there are enough big family-oriented places in Florida. Dog lovers and nature lovers should be very happy there. As for redneck bubba types, yes, there are a few - my mother and I were walking around and a man very hatefully snapped Hello Ladies at us. The man at the Gulf Kart company kept calling her Grandma and she hated that - I found him to be rather sarcastic with me. I thought his tone was hateful. But most people there were very friendly. Cedar Key is not for all people. Definitely not. And many parts of it are rundown - lots of mobile homes with trash in the yard, lots of rusty roofs, no sandy beaches except for a small manmade one - not many eateries or shops. You can do Cedar Key in 2 hours and be done with it. Without question.
