Catalina Island from Los Angeles or San Diego?
I will be visiting Southern California June 2008, will be in Los Angeles for 4-5 days and San Diego 6-7 days and want to spend one day in Catalina Island I want to know if it’s better to go from L.A. or from S.D. more than likely while in San Diego will stay in La Jolla and not sure yet while in L.A. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to Catalina Express. They depart from Long Beach or San Pedro.

Actually the departures are from Long Beach and Dana Point.
There are more frequent departures from Long Beach and it is closest to LA.
Dana Point is near San Clemente and is closest to La Jolla (but further from La Jolla than Long Beach is from LA).

From the LA area, we always take the morning Catalina Express out of San Pedro for a smooth ride, and when we return a couple days later take the 12 - 1 PM boat back. The dock is 25 minutes drive from LAX.

Yes, definitely go there from LA. You may want to stay there overnight too. You can cut from San Diego. You actually need more time to explore LA than SD. I would stay 4-5 nights in SD and 6-7 in LA, especially since you'll be doing Catalina from LA.

Again thank you.
Smartcookie (by the way I LOVE your screen name) yes, we will have a car but, I don't think we want to spend the night, thanks for the suggestion of increasing in L.A. and removing from S.D. I thought 5 days in L.A. would be enough, we are not doing any of the parks their (4 mid 30's - 40's females) we are only going to visit S.D. Zoo. Again thank you have a great day.

You're welcome and thank for the compliment You may want to consider stopping in Laguna Beach in Orange County about half way on your drive over to SD. Since you're not doing any of the theme parks, you should have a nice relaxing time with enough time to do everything you want. I would still recommend doing a studio tour in LA. Most people like the Warner Bros one best. For Catalina, make sure to get early morning tickets there and late afternoon tickets back, so that you have as much time on the island as possible.

While I also enjoyed the Wild Animal Park, I wouldn't say San Diego Zoo is like other zoon. It's more unique and larger than any I've been to (about 7 mostly in the west). I also would watch the weather, as it could hot at the WAP in June (inland in Escondido).
