Catalina Island
 

Hi Everyone:
Three Questions:

I am planning a trip in mid September to LA.

1. What is the temperature on Catalina
Island during Sepember?
2. Is it necessary to stay overnight to see
all the sites or is a day trip enough?

3. Is there anything to see in the Little
Harbor or Two Harbor area?

Here's my trip report to Catalina Island. We did a lot in just one day, but I would love to spend a couple of nights there. :)

1. September is the perfect time to visit Catalina. You have a good chance of sunny, clear days in the 80's.

2. Overnight is nice, but Avalon is a compact area, and can easily be seen in a day.

3. Two harbors is great for a nature-oriented stay, ie: camping, boating, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.

You didn't ask, but here are some other tips:

Try to find out which days the cruise ships call on Catalina, and avoid being there on those days.

Take the golf cart tour as soon as you get into port to orient yourselves to the area.

Be sure to walk out past the Casino (and the crowds) to Descanso Beach. You can sit at the beach and order food and cocktails. (Seetheworld can attest to how fun this is :) )

I'll be on Catalina in a couple of weeks with 130 5th graders. Want to trade? ;)

Mid september should be a great time to visit Catalina -- crowds gone and back to school, whether usually perfect, still warm enough in the water to swim, kayak and snorkel without a wet suit.

Not necessary to stay overnight, but you will probably wish you had if you don't.

Nothing to do in Two Harbors that you can't do in Avalon, other than visit Doug's or the Banning House. It's much quieter, however. We've camped there, we've moored a boat there, and we've been to a wedding there. I really enjoy snorkeling and kayaking there, but like I said, you can do that in Avalon.

1. The temperature should be 70s/80s in September

2. If you just want to walk around Avalon, you can do it in a day. If you want to do some activities (boat trips, kayaking, hiking, etc) I recommend staying overnight.

3. Not familiar with that area.

I would definitely recommend renting a golf cart and driving around the Avalon area as soon as you get there. By the afternoon they'll all be rented, and this is the best way to see Avalon & some great views from the hills!

We stayed overnight during our honeymoon trip. Don't stay at the Best Western if you decide to stay at all. Find a small inn/b and b instead. We were actually bored with the town after one day.
