Catalina Island

We are a family of 4 coming from NE over February break. We were thinking of spending a day on Catalina Island. Is it to cool at that time of yoea. Is there stuff for two young teenagers to do for the day?

Lgn - what do you mean by Feb break? Presidents day? Where will you be staying? How long are you here? What does your family like to do?

Yes it is Presidents week that I will be in LA. We are staying with relatives and taking a day trip to Catalina. I want to make sure there is stuff to do. We can bike and love the beach. The question is will it be warm enogh? And what else is there to do?

Kgn - it is not warm enough imo. I was in Catalina in March one year and it was very chilly - we did go kayaking but I was COLD.

Dh has been several times camping on "the other" side of the Island.

I rented a house once and stayed for about a week but that was when I was a teen! (now 40).

I would pass personally (I live in Orange County CA) - it is a long weekend - I would do other things with the teens - Santa Monica 3rd street promanade - shopping, walking around - I am sure there is someplace you can rent bikes in that area -

My NE family has come here to Southern CA for February break, and has been disappointed at how cool the weather has been at that time. It is really not beach weather. It will most likely be in the 60's or low 70's.

I'm not quite sure what is even open on Catalina then, but I wouldn't recommend it at that time of year. I don't think there is enough to keep teens busy if they can't get wet.

You might want to instead take a bike ride at the beach, or a whale watching trip. www.2seewhales.com

(Aside for dawn - MA schools get a week off in February and a week off at the end of April)

On Catalina, you can rent golf carts to ride around the island, it's fun!

It'll likely be fairly chilly. February is always rather cold here and we've been having quite a bit of rain since the beginning of '08. However, if you don't need to lay on the beach, there's plenty to so on Catalina that would keep you entertained during a day trip.

I personally love renting golf carts and driving up into the hills to admire the views. You can also rent bikes and cycle around Avalon. There's the Wrigley Botanical Garden and you can probably also take a tour of the Casino (actually a theater, not a casino). It'd be cold out on the water, but you can certainly kayak if you're up for it.
