carryon luggage
we are looking for a wheeled carry on that meets the guidelines of 22 X 14 X 9 including the wheels and handles.
have ordered a few on-line and they are either more than 22" or more than 14" wide even though the ad says they meet the guidelines. have been ordering 19" ones as well figuring they would equal 21+ with the wheels. the latest 19" one, was 19" (would like a little bigger) but 14 3/4" across. Can't take a chance of getting checked and would like a suitcase versus a duffle, since carrying camera equipment. would appreciate any suggestions of a make or model if you have one that fits. thanks much. |
This is why I don't like shopping on-line: it's the same as catalogues, you never know what exactly you're getting.
I have a measuring tape, and use it in stores. Also I see the exact shade of the color, and feel the weight. And right there, you can check how easy it is to open those zippers. Sorry, it sounds like a lecture. |
The FAA guidelines (and almost all airlines) restrict carryon luggage to a TOTAL of 45 inches (combined length, width and height). There is not a limit of 14" in any direction:
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/prepare_fly/baggage/ 22x14x9 is ok, so is 20x16x9. Etc. |
It depends and I don't want to count on a variable size. delta says 22x14x9. and that is our next flight.
|
If you fly on one of Delta's small jets, you'll probably have to gate check even a 19 inch bag.
Eagle Creek makes an awesome carry on bag. I just measured it, and it's about 21 inches long, if you include the handle. |
The big issue is the measuring box. While the airlines might talk about a total of 45 the measuring box is not adjustable and I don't know the size of the box but have see a lot of wheel bags rejected because the handle and especially the wheels did not fit inside the box. Some airlines are more rigid than others.

Since most airlines still allow one personal bag and one carryon I have one that fits under the seat.
It's big enough for the cameras and portable dvd player any extra equipment goes in the carryon. |
which eagle creek? carryon has to carry several lenses for camera, plus husbands birding scope, etc. etc.. tripods go in checked luggage.
