Carrying food packed in dry ice on airplane?
 

I looked at the TSA's website and couldn't find dry ice listed on it, has anyone traveled recently with food packed in dry ice? I was thinking about carrying a pizza out to a friend in Los Angeles but don't want it confiscated by airport security!

It's Lou's from Chicago and she's ordered it online a couple of times, I can also have it Fed Ex'd out to her from their website, I just thought I'd surprise her with one. I might just stick with Garrett's Popcorn...

No dry ice, no wet ice in carry on either

You can take dry ice on a plane if it is in a cooler and it is declared at check in. I use dry ice to bring fish back from Alaska every summer.

bdawk - have you done this since all the changes this fall?

Best advice I can give is call the airline you're flying. This is one of those things that airlines might have different rules for.

Whenever I go to Memphis I always bring back BBQ. I freeze it first and I carry it in an insulated freezer bag.

Pugsly, you put that in your carry-on, and have no problem? Does security *examine* it?

As bdawk posts, the best thing to do is call your airline. I took AirTran to Dayton last fall & on the way home, I stopped off & bought a cooler & picked up several pints of ice cream from Graeters (if you've ever had it, you'd know why I go through the trouble!) that they wrapped in dry ice. It was checked by the TSA at the counter, and I just asked them to tape the cooler up after they had inspected it, which they happily did. So, look at it this way: you could take Chicago pizza out and In-n-Out burgers & fries back!

I have taken coolers of many different things and checked them as luggage with ice packs. You will have to check about the dry ice as a carry-on, but I know you can check a cooler as luggage.

BTW, Lou's also ships via overnight carrier - lots easier than schlepping it with you!

I think I'll stick with something I know I can carryon like popcorn and send her a pizza for her birthday, much easier and no worries about some hungry security guard taking my pizza. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
