Carrying a painting aboard a plane

I need to take a painting with me from Florida to Dayton, Ohio. I am afraid to ship and do not care to unmount the canvas. It is a bit large, about 28" x 40". Could I carry it aboard? It would be about the size of a garment bag which I have seen men take on and have hung up. Will check airlines, just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Don't do it!

I would call the airline and see if they will be able to stow it where they hang the first class cabin's coats.

Shipping artwork is not a problem if done by an experienced shipper.

The art can be crated in a wood box and will arrive safely.

The key is experience. A gallery can give you the names of recommended shippers.

An art crate is necessary in order to ship. If you are near a liberal arts university, perhaps you could rent one of these special crates. I know we have done this as my sister is an artist and has to ship on occasion.

After my friend's funeraly, I needed to to bring home a framed painting which she had painted - did not want to gamble on flying with it.

Took it to a Mail Boxes Etc. in the town I was visiting. They did a stellar job of preparing it for shipment, packing it securely. I had them ship it but you could also have them (or some other reputable packing co.) pack it only and then you ship it. Ship by Fed Ex or UPS and insure it so that the parcel is insured AND trackable.

You will not be able to take it on board with you unless it complies with carry on restrictions. In other words, if it doesn't fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment, you will have to check it. I would ship it.
