Carolina Coasts in May?

We are contemplating a coastal drive up from Charleston to Richmond the week _before_ memorial day.

How crowded do you think it will it be?

We'd prefer to play it by ear and not make accom reservations unless it's going to be SRO and slim pickings.

Thanks for any advice!

Avoid Myrtle Beach. The bikers are around for the week before Memorial Day holiday.

Weather should be nice. Have a good trip.

Between golfers, conventions, and bikers, I'd make reservations.

GoTravel probably has it right.
How many stops are you contemplating? You can make reservations easily enough in Charleston to start. Then you want to avoid MB up to the SC/NC line TOTALLY.
So divide the rest up depending on what you want to see and do.

I often vacation at Topsail Island, NC in mid-to-late May. The air temperature is almost always a pleasant eighty or so without as much of the infamous southern summer humidity. The water temperature is usually in the upper sixties by then a maybe a tad more. In southern NC and South Carolina, you are quite close to the Gulf Stream. The crowds will also be much smaller except on weekends that time of year. Rents will be cheaper and easier to obtain.
