Carmel River Inn in August

I'm having trouble finding lodging. I've found availability at the Carmel River Inn and wondering if anyone has stayed here and if so, what do you think of it?

Here's a guess...you are trying to book a one-night weekend stay in the middle of high season without spending much money. In Carmel.

First, the Carmel River Inn is not in Carmel Village. Secondly, it's sort of a dump, which is why it popped up on a search. (Disclosure, I only drove past it and was glad we didn't book there).

Suggestion: Try Pacific Grove or Monterey instead of Carmel. If that doesn't work, try one of the cheap lodging chains on Munras Ave in Monterey.

I'm guessing that Econolodge, Travelodge, or Motel 6 would let you book only one night.

Good luck.

What dates do you need and how much do you want to spend?

janisj Nov 1st, 2008 03:35 PM

orangetravelcat: Yes - what are your dates. I doubt if many (or any) are full unless you are there Aug 13-16. Even that weekend should have availability this far out.

But even in places w/ rooms available, what you won't often find are one-night bookings on weekends.

If it IS Aug 13-16 - that is the busiest summer weekend in the Carmel area w/ veteran car races, the Pebble Beach Concours, etc.

Wrong guess, mlgb. We are looking for a four nite stay.

And yes, it is Aug 13-17, which I know is the busiest weekend. My husband just decided he wants to go to the historic races at Laguna Seca. We haven't gone in a few years and apparently, he feels ready to buck the crowds again. I am not looking for something on the par of Motel 6. But on the other hand, I don't want to spend 400 a nite, which is what I am finding. The Carmel River Inn is asking 179 a room. I was hoping we could find something in the 200-225 range.

It that case, you might want to give up on Carmel and try Salinas.

They have a Residence Inn that is showing availability.

I found the Seven Gables Inn in Pacific Grove for 200, and the Sandpiper Inn in Carmel for 189. I think we'll go with the Seven Gables inn In Pacific Grove.

I ended up booking the Sandpiper Inn in Carmel. Although the Seven Gables website said they had rooms for 200, they jacked up the price to 300 since it's the Concours weekend. The hotel is about a ten minute walk to downtown Carmel, and is near the beach. We've always stayed in either Pacific Grove or Monterey in the past, so Carmel will be a nice change.

You did quite well then. Much better than Carmel River Inn.

The Sandpiper Inn is very nice, just a couple hundred feet (if that) from Carmel beach. Bit further walk to downtown Carmel (maybe 15 min), but the peace & quiet are worth it, IMO !

We have stayed at the Sandpiper, it's very nice and in a quiet location, we had a very pleasant stay, Carmel is a gorgeous area to spend time in, we're looking forward to being back in the area for awhile in a few weeks. ***kim*** ((f))
