Carmel Mission
We would like to see the Carmel Mission and I know it is open on Sundays but would we be interupting any services then. Didn't know if during the week would be better for a first time visit. Also, does anyone know how long a time period should be allowed for a visit?
|
The Mission is open all day, every day -- but if you want a full tour, you'll want to avoid times when Mass is held:
http://www.carmelmission.org/mass_celebrations.htm Depending on your level of interest, expect to spend 15 minutes or up to an hour touring the grounds and the buildings. The garden areas are particularly outstanding during springtime. |
The Mission is self guided. Beautiful to see but one hour will more than handle it. Finish there and then go behind the Mission to Clint Eastwood's Carmel Mission Ranch for a drink on the patio of the restaurant if on a weekend.
|
If it is not on the weekend, do you know if you can you walk around the property of the Mission Ranch if you are not a guest?
|
Sure drh, It's not very big. Mass is said in the chapel and the rest of the Mission is to the side of it. Be sure to visit the small cemetery. And the chapel is worth a visit too, between Masses.
|
I'm sorry but I meant would it be ok to walk around the grounds of Clint Eastwood's Carmel Mission Ranch if you are not a guest there.
|
Yes, that's what I mean isn't very big. The accommodations are mostly small cabins. There's a restaurant and tennis courts. It's all open and on a small cove overlooking Point Lobos.

drh, the Carmel Mission on Sunday mornings is angelic. We stopped for photos and a short tour, and were so drawn to the chapel for the lovely service. You will certainly NOT be interrupting, as they welcome visitors with open arms... whether you are attending service or not. As Auntiemaria said, if you want the "full tour" days other than Sunday will be more suitable.
Enjoy... hope there is much sunshine & many large shadows there for breathtaking photography... this place was one of the highlights of our 20th anniv trip to the area. http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=34452270 |
I agree with the first sentence of makai1's post. When visiting Carmel a few years ago, I attended early Sunday Mass there. There's something about the way the church is positioned in relation to the sunrise. The Mass schedule is probably posted.

We visit Carmel several times a year and I have yet to see the mission. We'll be going back to the area in August for four days and it's definitely on my list. :D ***kim*** ((*))
