Carmel/Big Sur in late March
 

We are travelling through this area at the end of March with 2 college-age sons. We were considering a couple of nights at Big Sur Lodge. I heard it was too cold and foggy that time of year and that we should consider Carmel Valley instead. Any comments or suggestions about hotels would be appreciated.

Never stayed in Big Sur, however, Carmel Valley is beautiful. Not sure if there is enough to do for teenagers though. Bernardus Lodge, Carmel Valley Lodge or Quail Lodge are all great, but cater to adults. If they like to golf, its great. Have fun!!

Big Sur in March could very well be cold and foggy - and rainy. But it could be like that in July too. It's still spectacular, and if you will be driving through there it would make sense to stay there. Carmel Valley can be quite a ways from Big Sur. The Big Sur Lodge is a basic motel-type place. I think the room s over the main building are nicer, with river views. Nice restaurant too, but pricey.

We stayed at Big Sur Lodge last August (one adult, three teens). It was just fine. We had a room with two queens, but next time I'll try for one with the seperate living area and small kitchen. They were furnished very nice and had a walk out balcony facing the woods. There's a nice convenient store on the property as well as the restaurant. We went to dinner "in town" and came back for ice cream at the lodge. If you're adventurous take the walk through the stream to the watering hole. Do this only if you're in fairly good shape and I'd recommend water shoes (lots of slippery rock climbing). My teens had a blast jumping from the high rocks in to the waterhole. You get free access to all state beaches with the entry pass. There are some fairly easy hikes as well. BTW, having the pool is also a bonus. I'll stay there again. Fog or not, it's an area not to be missed.

We did a coastal drive in mid-march a few years ago. We spent 1 night in Big Sur. It was cool (light weight jackets were fine) but not cold. There was no rain or fog. The coast was spectacular.
