Car Rentals—Convenience v. Price (or both)?

I’m looking at price, but my DW is more concerned with convenience—how quickly we will get the car, who has the most frequent shuttles, who’s paperwork/lines are shorter, etc. We’ll be renting at Honolulu, Kauai and Maui, although Honolulu, our poa after a 15+ hour day, is our main concern. I’ve been checking DHCR, particularly $ and Thrifty, but she thinks cheaper must mean poorer service and therefore Hertz must be more convenient (their phone quote was not bad, but more than DHCR). We have little experience with car rentals (none in Hawaii) and value the input from the more experienced travelers here.

IMO... I do not think there is a great deal of difference between the car rental companies in Hawaii. That being said go for price. Here is a site to get a pretty fair price, http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/ If you are game, try Hotwire. http://www.hotwire.com. I got an unbelievable deal for Maui for my upcoming trip.

A note about Honolulu. If you are staying in the heart of Waikiki, you do not need a car the whole time, in fact it is a PITA. Consider renting at a Waikiki location to get out and about the island for a day or 2. The drive to the North side is a great day trip.

Thanks!
We're only in Oahu 2 full days (3 nights) and will probably spend most of that time away from Waikiki, so it looks we'll need a car all the time. Our hotel has free parking. I'll probably book with DHCR tonight, particularly since it's cancelable.

LOL, I just realized what you meant by DHCR. Yes, the free parking is nice.

We always try to use Enterprise, for their stellar performance and service. We will never rent from Fox again. Dollar and Thrifty are perfectly fine, in our experience.
