For Oahu you might check on 'The Bus' to see if you could use public transportation instead of another car rental to get where you want to go. Cheap and easy. www.thebus.org

Before renting a car in Hawaii, go to http://www.mauiinformationguide.com/...ar-rentals.php
It has loads of good tips and will answer questions you may have before you get screwed by a bad company.

We used "dollar rental" in every port. Had a good car and great rate. $39 a day with the exception of a convertible one day.

I got a great deal from Costco. 12 days on Kauai, compact, for $225.00 including all taxes and charges. 18 more days!

I used discounthawaiicarrental for a convertible in Maui in February and paid around $300 for a week, which was $150 less than most others were quoting me.

I wanted to get a convertible in Maui but almost all the companies were wanting $63 plus tax per day. Thought that was way too much. I used Enterprise because I wanted to be able to put my 21 year old Daughter on the car without paying extra per day. Enterprise doesn't advertise convertibles. At the Maui airport, I asked them about the convertible and got one for $48 a day and this included an extra driver. I thought that was a great deal. Enterprise says they don't always take reservations for the convertible because they are not sure how many they will have. So you are taking a chance but they had plenty on the lot. Getting the convertible was worth it especially on the road to Hana.

On Oahu I used Dollar-very cheap 4 days came to around $80 for a compact. This was a month ago.

For Enterprise if you don't want a convertible, it's much less.

iamq - did you get a special low mileage deal, since we know you will be doing a roundrip to the airport and other than that parking that compact and hitting the beach, walking to town, walking to sunset, talking story with the locals at the pier, taking a run to makau, and blowing off the congestion at Ke'e? Face it you've gotten so local, you may as well hitchhike to the grocery at princeville and leave that car at rest!!!!

Sarah, I usually start with hotwire to compare company rates and take it from there. Goodluck.

k'lani,
Martin thinks we should just buy a beat up truck or old Toyota for a couple of hundred and give it away when we leave. I like that man's style!

We used Alamo in May. Paid $41.92/day (taxes/fees included) for 7 days on the Big Island for a Sebring Convertible.

On Kauai, for 5 days, same Sebring Convertible was $34.78/day (taxes & fees included).
Both included an extra driver.

What I did was this: Got a price through discounthawaiicarrental.com.
Then, called Alamo. Told them I could beat the initial price quoted. They asked the price I had, then refigured and came back with a lower price.

Also, used the $25 coupon in the ET book for each island. The way I got the extra driver free was I asked. They retorted, do you have a Costco or Sam's membership?? which I did. Voila!!!

It took more than one phone call. These people are real bargainers, if you know how to work it.

One of the inital quotes to me was $500+!!! I laughed out loud, told him that was crazy and he started back pedaling.
