car rentals in seattle

Does anyone know where to rent a car? Someone told me not to rent at the airport because there are extra taxes. However, we will be coming into Seattle airport and would like to rent the car easily. We will be renting it for 10 days. Thanks very much.

Tax on car rentals in Washington state is around 18%. Renting at the airport is around another 8-10%. There are some off-site places listed on the airport's website, although I can't say I've ever heard of them.

You're welcome! I'm sorry that I don't have any better info; perhaps someone else here will have more insight.

Hi,

Upon arriving in seattle, I believe you can catch a bus that services all downtown seattle hotels... and the one-way fare for this bus might be about $9 per person.

Such a bus could get you to, say, the downtown HILTON hotel where you could rent through either Alamo or National at off-airport rates.

Go online and 'pretend' to make a reservation for either of those companies... the first one being for picking-up at the airport, and returning to the airport... and get the rate quote...

THEN make the exact same reservation only picking-up DOWNTOWN and returning DOWNTOWN (actually, you should check picking up downtown and returning at the airport TOO, just in case)... and see with your own eyes what the price difference is.

Hope this helps.

(P.S. - the other major car rental companies can be found downtown too)

We did a one way rental from Seattle to Medford, Oregon for a total of two weeks. I checked all sources of agencies. We ended up saving something like $300 by picking the car up downtown rather than at the airport. The entire one way rates were different on cars picked up downtown as opposed to cars picked up at the airport -- it wasn't simply a matter of additional fees or taxes.

I checked Jun 15 to 25 with Alamo at the airport and it was $280 plus $135 in taxes/fees for a midsize.....so yes it is almost a whopping 50percent additional tacked on.

Downtown from Alamo you would save almost $80 in taxes and fees so it depends if the hassle is worth the savings to you.

There's a number of car rental places scattered around central downtown Seattle.

To get there from the airport would cost ~$30-35 by taxi, ~$9 by Airport Greyliner Bus, $2 on Metro public transportation. And take 25 mins. to 1 hour.

Depends what "rent the car easily" means to you, I guess.

fodorite bobmrg just shared this with me:

"... look at the web page for Shuttle Express.... www.ShuttleExpress.com. Good to know: When looking for a ride to or from an airport in the yellow pages, don't look under Taxis, look under Airport Transportation."

i checked it out and it looks great. i'm planning to use it to pick up a car myself. let me know how you make out.

I can't help with rental cars at all since we lived there. But, I can vouch for Shuttle Express. My husband traveled a lot and used that regularly and they were always very good.

I really need to wake up fully before I post! Corwin--Shuttle Express is great for transportation to/from the airport, but I would call the car rental places first as many have their own shuttles to the offsite rentals.

Thank you everyone. This was my first time asking a question on this forum and I can't believe how nice everyone was in responding - thank you very much. I just booked Hertz with the entertainment coupon and got an all inclusive rate of $321.00 for a full size car picking up and returning at the airport. Believe it or not, for full size car it was more expensive downtown seattle. Thanks once again.

That's a great solution! Driving in and out of the airport to downtown is real simple and this plan will be MUCH more streamlined that any other option.
