Car Rental With Turo Anyone?

I just booked a car in SLC from Turo. I haven't used this company before and I am a little anxious. Their price was better than any of the the other rental companies even with adding insurance (I checked with my insurance company-they really weren't helpful as to whether I am covered or not so I'll get it)
Just wondering if anyone else has booked with them and how their experience was

I've never heard of them so I had to look them up. It looks like they are a company that brokers private vehicle owners with renters, similar to VRBO. So perhaps a name like CRBO (Car Rental By Owner) might be a good nickname.

I suppose in this case you can book an exact car so if you wanted something specific that'd be a plus. On the flip side, it might be you never know if what you see online is a good representation of what you'll get...

It's the question that could have been asked before booking, I suppose. Is the reservation cancellable, both by you or the car's owner?

It's fully cancellable up until a day before. TrustPilot gives the service high marks

"I haven't used this company before and I am a little anxious"

You actually are not renting from them . . . it is exactly like airbnb/vrbo in that you are renting from a private party and turo is just putting the two of you in touch. It is simple 'car sharing' and this is probably a bridge too far for me. YMMV

I wouldn't use them, what if your car breaks down , will the owner have a replacement car for you? If so, how long before they bring it to you (or worse do you have to drive or have it towed back to them)?
How do you verify that their insurance is valid, aka in force? Anyone can show you one of those paper proof of insurance cards the companies send you when you take out or renew your auto policy. But what if they have not paid the premiums and the policy has been cancelled?

The owners insurance won't cover someone else if they are using the car as a business (or possibly at all). I think Turo has some insurance plan their users are supposed to buy, just like rental companies do. Or else the people "sharing" their cars from Turo are supposed to buy it. As you are totally liable for the car under their terms. So you'd have to find out what your own car insurance covers if you are driving some other car, particularly if you are paying to do that. Sounds like you bought their insurance, which is a good idea. I'm sure credit cards wouldn't cover a car rental that isn't an authorized business.

Are you aware that you are liable for any parking ticket the car gets up to 24 hours AFTER you turn it in?

I'd just be concerned about safety issues.

I would never do that unless it were the only way to get some particular type of car I wanted. I sure wouldn't do it for a regular compact.

Interesting discussion. If I needed a rental around my home town for local use I might consider it, but I don't think I'd bet my vacation plans on this yet...

There's a car-rental shortage and it's going to get worse this summer. I suppose a lot of people will be turning to Turo.

You might want to google TURO NIGHTMARE.

It's interesting. Everyone here is pretty cautious about it but the other forum I am on everyone has had an excellent experience with them. I will keep my reservation for now, and watch prices with the larger companies. The big boys have exploded in price.

" . . . I will keep my reservation for now, and watch prices with the larger companies . . . "

It's your money. As long as you understand you are not renting anything from turo. They don't actually have any cars.
