Car Rental West Palm Beach
Does anyone have any great ideas for car rental in West Palm Beach? We'll have to rent for three weeks and are trying to get a decent car (size wise) for us oldies with some arthritis problems, but not fancy.
Thanks for any great ideas, other than the usual. |
Renting at a non-airport location will help cut costs. Maybe cab it to a hotel for the first night and then pick up a rental car nearby? Enterprise will deliver in most locations.

High season Feb/March....or when?
|
Look on hotwire. We have gotten some great car rental deals there. Also, if you belong to Costco, check out their car rentals.
|
Although we haven't done it in West Palm, we've had good luck using Priceline to rent cars in other locations.
|
Thanks, all. Yes, it will be end of Jan to mid or late Feb. Wish I could go offsite to rent, maybe get a friend to pick us up at airport and rent next day. Will consider.
Will try hotwire - priceline didn't look so good at the moment. |
Rentalcars.com has a pretty extensive data base, I would try there.
Also, if you book the best, cancelable /refundable rate you can get now, submit your info to autoslash.com and see if they can find a better rate. Keep checking daily, sometimes something pops up randomly. I am doing this for a trip to California next month. Costco had the best (still crazy high) rate so far. |
Does any company rent cars without a per day surcharge for extra drivers??
|
If you rent through Costco, it covers second driver on all the brands they carry.
For more on free second driver, read the last few comments on here, but we warned there was a bit of a spat on it. http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...m#last-comment |
Yes. Lots of them do.
You may have to join their free loyalty program, but most of the "big" companies do. Check for the company you are interested in. This is big news from Hertz - <I>https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/produ...nal_driver.jsp Whether you're embarking on a lengthy journey, or just want to take the driving in turns, Hertz have introduced multiple additional drivers) so everyone can relax and enjoy the journey. You can now have as many drivers as there are seats in the vehicle. So don't find yourself nominated as the sole designated driver for the entire trip - ask at the counter for multiple additional drivers when you collect your Hertz rental car and share the driving with your fellow passengers. Small print = Terms & Conditions Offer is valid at participating Hertz locations. All additional drivers must produce a valid driving licence at the time and place where they are added onto a rental agreement and must meet the same Hertz terms and conditions as for renting. The number of additional divers is limited to the number of passenger seats in the vehicle rented. Additional drivers can be added at any time during a rental provided the term and conditions are complied with. |
If you belong to AAA or USAA that may provide free additional drivers as well. It did in the past.
Co-workers were always free (for corporate rentals) and family members and/or same-sex partners/ roommates residing at the same address have been free for years from National. But Hertz has hit it out of the ballpark with their new policy. |
"Wish I could go offsite to rent, maybe get a friend to pick us up at airport and rent next day. Will consider"
If you are renting for three weeks, it's definitely worth it not to pay the airport surcharge. Even if you get a taxi to the closest off-site rental counter, your savings should be significant. |
...but does that link from Hertz state that their additional driver fee has been waived? I'm only reading that you can have as many as you want.

I don't know Clark. Call and ask
|
I was wondering the same thing clark.
|
I agree, it's confusing.
I do know that when it's a corporate rental, co-workers are not an additional charge, spouse/same-sex partners are not, and family members who are AAA or USAA members are not. I've been a #1 Gold Member for a long time. Check with Hertz to confirm what's available to you (you = each individual person). |
Thanks again, everyone.
It is an interesting topic now. We used to get corporate-spouses-no-extra-charge - but now it's a mixed bag. When I googled charges for second driver, I found some of the things you all are saying: loyalty cards, AAA, AARP, etc. do help but it varies with company. I got a decent rate from Thrifty, who say (in the small print) that there is no charge for second driver, if the first driver "is physically impaired." HMMM -- I wonder what that means. Probably have to show a Disabled Sticker. I am going to follow up, using AAA and AARP code numbers with Avis and Budget, who they say will honor "no extra charge." I'll try to summarize for Fodorites when I get some answers. Thanks, again. |
Just for curiosity sake, see what they say about domestic partners. I'm guessing the car rental companies are considering them the equivalent as "spouse" on a nationwide basis, but that's just as guess.
|
Well, I hope so. But let's see if they've caught up.
|
Again, not to be a broken record, but if you have a Costco [and probably Sam's Club etc] membership, all rentals include a second driver with no cost. And they don't care who it is, spouse or partner.
