Car rental underage 25 in Maui ? Please help.

My friend and I are going to Maui in 7 days. And we are facing dilemma - where to rent a car, cause both of us are under 25 y/o and over 21y/o. We are trying to avoid big companies cause they charge surcharge fees, which is way too high for us. And we don't have own car insurance. I heard about local companies in Maui, which rent old cars ( I afraid they may break in the middle of your trip :)))
Any suggestions ?

Do a Yahoo (or other search engine) search:

car rental maui under 25

There is a lot of info.

Do avoid the Rent a Wrecks if you can - they are.

A friend of mine had to do that because for some reason her car insurance only allowed $15 per day rental while her car was being repaired - and she got two cars in a row that broke down.

Thanks a lot for all your advices. I called to every local company in Maui and to big national companies - and situation just ridiculous. Locals don't want to rent us because we don't have our own car insurance and we are under 25y/o, and national companies gave us rate about 400 - 500 $ a week including taxes, insurance , etc.
We did find one local company - Kihei rentals - they gave us rate for an economy car - 280$ a week including everything. Is it a good rate ? And have anyone rented from them before ? How their cars ?
I don't want to ended up renting a junk that gonna break in the middle of our trip. Where else we can look up?

take what you can get with kihei rentals. if you tried everywhere else and this is the best deal go for it. $280. a week WITH insurance is not bad at all and here in Hawaii we have safety inspections every year so the cars need to be in good shape, especially to rent so don't worry about the car breaking down.

I don't know where you get your safety inspection done, but mine invloves looking at the tires, making sure all the lights work, honk the horn, listen to the exhaust, verify I have two of my three mirrors, and see my insurance card!

...and check for rust, duct tape and cracked windshields! guess they do it different in Maui
