I had already prepaid for 3 nights. I understand I am way uptown. Would like to get closer to downtown but hotel rates are too expensive. I will be happy if I can find any room for $200. I will continue to search since I haven't booked for Oct 17-19. As long the place is safe and clean I am good.

Is it still possible for you to cancel if you find something better? Check TripAdvisor reviews. There are several ok recommendations in the $150-200 range closer to the action. I've stayed with a friend at 109th before near Columbia and even that was really far from downtown. Might as well stay in some parts of Brooklyn or Jersey if it's that far as it will be faster to commute to the areas where you will be. If you're not too picky, I've read good things about Seafarer's in a good location for around $110 with a private bathroom. There is also a place in Chelsea recommended on TripAdvisor for around $100-120.
In terms of cheap buses, no, not Greyhound. There are Chinese companies running buses to Boston, Philly, DC etc for dirt cheap. I've taken it to DC before. $35 roundtrip for the 4 hr ride each way. No issue. Just google and you will find several companies. I wouldn't recommend going out of the way to Niagra Falls just for that. I hear it's completely not worth the 7hr trip each way. You also don't need to rent a car for that even if you do decide to go. If you do want to go somewhere, go to Boston or DC which are much closer with more stuff to go.

Smartcookie - thanks. I have decided to skip Niagara Falls. The drive/distance take too much out of my trip. I am sticking with NYC and Boston. Haven't book for Boston hotel yet either. I will try TripAdvisor. Thanks again.
