car rental in Maui

Two friends and I are going to Maui in September. We will rent a car and drive around. Which kind of car do you recommend? 4WD SUV? or just an Economy sedan would be OK?

Economy sedan would be OK but a convertible makes the difference when doing either the Pali or the Hana drives!

Old Southern Belle,
Convertible? is that also 4WD? is that for sightseeing or road surface problem? I'm a little confused. Thanks for helping.

I think OSB means a convertible automobile for cruising and sightseeing *with the top down*! Enjoy your trip! :)

Yes, we covered the island pretty well and did so in our Sebring convertible. No 4WD needed on Maui.

And in fact, if you're not doing the Road to Hana or the Pali Circle tour, you may not need the convertible at all.
It really makes these drives wonderful!

Unless it rains and you don't get the top up in time!

A sedan would be fine but if you can get a good rental rate, consider a convertible or a jeep wrangler. We rented a jeep on Maui and loved it!

sylvia: Press the button and clip too the windshield...no problem! We used it more to keep the noontime sun off us, esp. on the open road!
