Car Rental Drop-off Fees

Does anyone have any idea of the average cost for renting a car in Phoeniz and dropping it off in Las Vegas? I'm just wondering if I'm better off returning it to Phoenix, flying to LV, and renting another car there. I really like having a car in LV.

I went the other way - from LV to Phoenix. With Budget it cost me $50 extra but that was with a 2 week rental 3 years ago. Forgot the rate, but it wasn't too bad. Beware of lower rates with high drop off charges.

Personally I would fly and rent a another car in Vegas. Saves a few hours and unless you plan on stopping along the way, it is a boring drive for the most part.

I have made this trip many times. I visit my folks in Phoenix and then add on a few days in Vegas every time. I would only fly unless you have a few days to stop in Sedona, Grand Canyon, etc. (which is an awesome trip in it's own right).
Enjoy,
Duane

Postal,

Don't you think your question would be better answered by the rental car company rather than people reading the Fodors forum?

Curious

Phx to Vegas generally about $70 per day, $275 per week.

Usually cheaper to do the fly and re-rent thing, especially if you can nab a Southwest Airlines internet one-way special.

Not necessarily, Curious, since I've already received a couple of HELPFUL and NICE answers from OTHERS on this board!

We're renting a car in Phoenix in early March and returning it to Las Vegas. We shopped around and the best we could do for a one-week rental was $501 via Hertz.

Hope that helps!

We rented a car from Alamo last April in Phoenix and dropped it off 10 days later in Las Vegas and they didn't charge any drop-off fee at all. We felt very lucky because many rental agencies weren't even offering one-way rental after having so many cars displaced after 9/11.

If you're trying to avoid a drop charge try National Car Rental. FYI weekend rates, always cheaper, begin at noon on Thursday but do not apply to one way rentals. Alamo and Dollar are usually the cheapest espescially in Phoenix, but Alamo is famous for drop charges and given this distance it could likely be a couple hundred dollars.

Sorry, guess I spoke too soon. I went back and checked with Alamo and they now have a $150 drop-off fee. I guess I should have checked instead of relying on how it was almost a year ago. Your best choice might be to go through the individual websites and check or maybe through one of the websites like Orbitz or Expedia, where you get rate comparisons. But always check back with the individual websites , I have alway found better rates there.

I forgot this earlier. Regarding one way car rentals its better to make two reservations. Pick up your round trip Phoenix rental, renturn it the day you're leaving for LV and then return it soon as you get to LV and then get a round trip rental for LV. This way you're not paying the one way rate for the ENTIRE time you have the car.

National doe not charge drop fees.
Price it on travelocity.com
I book one ways all the time and always with National!
The last was a one way from Florida to Texas... for 59.00 total.
