Car rental

Need to rent a car and it seems prices are all over the place. I know I have used a great website before but can't think of the name right now. Any suggestions

I like to use www.orbitz.com for rental car comparison shopping, then go directly to the company website to actually book. Kayak.com is also pretty good.

Orbitz shows a list of all co's and car sizes on one page for easy viewing. I've found that the prices on Orbitz match the rental car co website prices reasonably well.

I've also noticed in the last year that rental car prices in CA have gone way up. It used to be that I could get a car for around $30/day out of SFO or San Jose, and even less at San Diego. Now prices seem to all be north of $50 or $60/day.

I do the same thing with travelocity.

This Florida oriented site provides discount codes and tips that are often good across the country: http://www.mousesavers.com/rentalcar.html

have you ever used the option with priceline "quote your own price" ???

J62 Jul 27th, 2010 07:56 AM

Yes, I've used PL quote your own price for rental cars. It's much less of a crap shoot compared to hotels since they only use the major rental car co's.

You need to be careful about what price you're quoting - I think they use a daily price, and I'm not 100% sure how any added fees (airport fee, taxes or tourism surcharges, etc) are factored in.

Be sure to spend a little time on www.betterbidding.com to become familiar with PL & rental cars before you jump in.

Priceline includes all fees and taxes, so if you bid $15 per day, you pay $15 per day. That's the advantage. The disadvantage is that you can't get a weekly rate, but if you can get the bid accepted, you can save tremendously with Priceline. I've used it successfully all over the country, and it's worked almost all times except during busy holiday periods.

I ended up using Hot Wire. Got a great rate. Thanks for all the help.
