Car Needed for 4 days in Islamorada?

Hi,

My husband and I will be in Islamorada for 4 days this coming May. We will drive from Key West and then be going on to SoBe. I am wondering if I need to have the car I rent in Key West while we are in Islamorada or if we can get around without one and then just rent one the day we drive to Miami? We are staying at The Days Inn which is at MM 82.7. We will spend our days fishing and sunning and our nights out at a bar or something. We figured we could grab a cab to get the mile from the hotel to Holiday Isle. Do you think we will need a car for anything else? I just don't want to pay for it if we are not going to use it. Thanks!

I wouldn't want to be there without a car. There are many places in the area you would want to go to without bothering with a cab, and you certainly wouldn't want to walk anywhere along the road as there are no sidewalks and the traffic is usually bad.

Keep the car, especially if you need it to continue onto SoBe. The only place you don't need a car in the Keys is Key West. I'm trying to remember the place we stopped for lunch in Islamorada. If I find the place, I'll come back and post it. They had great food, decent prices, and were packed!

I can't believe I found the info so fast!

Good place for lunch:
Ziggie's Gumbo & Crab Shack
(Seafood & Cajun food)
83000 Overseas Hwy (MM 83)

Papa Joe's (good for lunch or dinner)
MM 79.7
I am friends with someone who used to live in Islamorada and Papa Joe's is the only place she ever recommended. Fantastic seafood dishes! And if you go at sunset, you'll have a great view!

(Both of these restaurants are Bayside)

Check out www.SEE-FloridaKeys.com for more info. You can probably order their Florida Keys pamphlet, it's free in the Keys.

Have fun!

Keep the car. While you can have much fun at Holiday Isle I can't see 4 days spent on their property alone. Also, Islamorada nightlife is very spotty, what might be a fun place one night will be dead the next. You don't want to pay for a cab to a bar, only to find out 15 minutes later you want to go someplace else, and so on. Of course, if you want to cut loose and sink more than just a few drinks, of course the cab is the way to go. But I would keep the car unless you are on a extremely tight budget.

Hi All,

Thanks so much for the great advice. I will just go ahead and keep the car, it sounds like we will need it. I am assuming however that I will want to get rid of it when we get to SoBe. I hear the parking is horrible?

Thanks for the restaurant advise too, we will definitely check both places out while we are in Islamorada.

Thanks again!
