Capulin Volcano Nntl monument
Has anyone been? How difficult/long is the drive in from the highway? Impressions?
|
I went a LONG time ago (20 years) and liked it. Very easy drive, and it was neat to see the old lava field. Now that I've seen Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Capulin does pale by comparison...

thanks! I'm a volcano nerd, so I guess it's added to my list of sights next trip to N.M.

The ride in from I25 is about 35 miles east along US64. It is an easy drive, not spectacular as far a scenery goes, but not boring either.
Capulin Volcano has an almost perfect conical shape. There is a drive up to the rim where you can look down into the crater. It is covered with greenery now, belying its volcanic past (which was over 60,000 years ago). Definately worth a side trip if in that part of New Mexico. Keith |
Here is the National Park Service link for Capulin:
www.nps.gov/cavo/index.htm We always stop - I love the view and the trail down into it is easy. |
Thanks, all! I love doing stuff like this in addition to the usual...

As a Volcano 'nut', have you been to El Malipas Nat'l Monument (also in NM). Has some interesting caves and lava tubes. Ranger tours are sometimes available summer weekends. http://www.nps.gov/elma/

Wow! Better and better--thank you very much!

Been there. Worth the trip.
