Cape Cod with kids
Hi! I'm going to Cape Cod for two weeks in July with a group of 13. Among them are my two children ages 2 and 4 and a half. Noone from our group has ever been to Cape Cod before. We have a day trip to Martha's Vineyard planned and my husband would like to see a baseball game, but other than that we are trying to figure out what to do!! We are staying in Harwich and will have a car. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on places to visit, things to do, and kid friendly places to eat. Thanks in advance :-)

Beach, beach, beach! See if you can get a town parking sticker; one may come with your rental.
There are miniature golf and bouncy parks and water park things everywhere, really, just look around on Route 28. Ditto kid-friendly food. Fish from a dock. Go on a charter boat. Visit Thornton W Burgess's house in Sandwich. Check a couple of his books out of the librar before you go. There is a famous carousel in Oak Bluffs for your day on the Vineyard. I am not sure what else there is for kids to do. |
Here are some suggestions:
there is a fish hatchery in Sandwich which would be fun for your kids. http://www.capecodmommies.com/mommy-...-fish-hatchery it's free except if you want to buy food to feed the fish. Also says to bring wipes for kids hands. http://www.capecodtravel.com/article...-kids-cape-cod http://www.brewsterstore.com/ pirate cruise: http://capecodpirateadventures.com/ (recommended for 3 and above tho.) go to a drive in theater http://www.wellfleetcinemas.com/ http://boston.mommypoppins.com/kids/...day-activities As you can see, lots and lots to do with kids on Cape Cod. Enjoy. Most casual restaurants are kid friendly too. |
A couple of other things which would be fun:
Chatham Fish Pier -- Chatham's fish pier is the place to be when local fishermen unload their catch of the day. See the hilarious show as resident seals beg for lunch. The Pier is open all year, but prime time to see the seals is May through August. Your husband could take in a free Cape Cod baseball game. http://www.capecodbaseball.org/ http://www.trekaroo.com/places/wellf...ts/restaurants (kid friendly restaurants in Wellfleet) http://www.urbanspoon.com/tn/103/4/1...rt-restaurants http://www.trekaroo.com/places/harwi...ts/restaurants This should give you a good start! |
One thing absolutely not to do is go to Cape Cod Mall on a rainy day!
I am not kidding. When people can't go to the beach, they suddenly think "Mall!!!!" Only, everybody thinks they are the only person to think this, so there are legendary traffic jams in Hyannis. Locals know ways around some of it, but most people just sit stewing in their cars. Plan for one rainy day and take books, games, puzzles etc. |
Thanks so much for your replies...getting excited!

Nantucket Sound will be calm and warmer than the Atlantic ocean so Harwich is a good choice.

How about the weather? Pants for the evening?

Cape Cod potato chip factory
And figure out something to do in your rental for a rainy day or 2 - new puzzle, toy. Take seriously the comment above about when it rains - but not just the mall. Gridlock traffic everywhere when it rains, since no one wants to be cooped up with bored kids in the rain. Pants and sweatshirts. If it rains, it sometimes is quite cool - so a few of each. |
Melissa, even if it is not cool in the evening it can be buggy, so long pants and long sleeves are a good idea.

melis, not Melissa. Sorry
