Oh good grief. Does it look like Kansas or California?

No one said it was THE most NE looking town, but look at a *calendar if you've lost your perspective. It looks like a NE town (*the kind that has a different region per month). There's a house on a lake near me I've always said looks like Newport. Does it actually "represent" Newport? No. But not a single person I've said that to has nitpicked enough to correct me. Because it's,,,,conversation!

Most readers understood the point being made.

J -- I went to high school in a small town on Boston's South Shore, which I also think of a characteristic New England shore town. Chatham reminds me of it quite a bit, though it has much better hotels. I also like Wellfleet but that was not the subject I was addressing.

"Chatham would be fine for just relaxing, but why come to Cape Cod to do that?"

Ask Henry Beston. All many of us ask from a seaside town is pleasant view, a beach for walking and a quiet porch on which to read. Oh, and a supply of gin.

Well, we were just on Cape Cod for the first time a few weeks ago, and I thought the whole darn thing looked like a calendar photo--insanely pretty and picturesque. And I was impressed with how distinct the villages are one from another. So even though it's small, Cape Cod is diverse enough to offer more than one kind of ambiance. Surely there's no need to argue about that!
