We did this drive 2 summers ago and found that Albany was the best 1/2 way point. We stopped adn the kids went swimming and I did a quick run to the Talbots outlet before getting back on the road

Niagara is pretty urban. There are some beautiful towns on US 20, an older route that parallels I-90. Skaneateles is a charming place on a beautiful lake, and Seneca Falls is the birthplace of the Women's Rights movement in the US with a number of historic sites. You could get to them with no more than a thirty minute detour from the boring interstate highway. Even better, leave I-90 west of Albany and follow US 20 until you get bored. It is a pretty road through rolling dairy farms and small towns. When you get tired, you can easily reconnect to the Interstate.

US 20 is not all dual carriageway except for passing places, but it has very little traffic compared to the main motorway.

Sorry, I meant "Albany" is pretty urban, though Niagara is too, esp on the US side.

Many thanks for the info. I think that sounds a good option and will look into it. Assume hotels would be reasonably easy to find in that area.

Depends on when. Much of this is a scenic holiday area (hard to imagine when you are on the NY Throughway) so you should book in advance for July and early August.

I am actually going the other way, from Toronto (about 80 mins from Niagara)to Cape Cod and everyone that I have spoken to advises to book a place near Albany as well.
