cape cod to new hampshire in SNOW!!!
have to make a judgement call here. Snow storm coming, will make for great skiing, thinking of driving up to New Hampshire super early Saturday morning. Right when snowstorm is hitting. Do you think it'll be terrible driving??? If I'm crawling along Route 3 to Boston and then again on 93 to New Hampshire, I think I'll pass. Going up tonight is not an option.

I think it should be fine - but snow is predicted to be more south than north. I drive in all sorts of weather, and often find that an inch of snow on a weekday creates more problems than 6 inches on the weekend. For the former, everyone thinks it is nothing and goes out and drives like a bozo. For the latter, people who are scared stay home, there is less volume.
Are you not from around here? Snow "storm" is not predicted - only 2-6 inches. Although the weather hype people who have not had their snow fix for the season might have you thinking so. Have a good time. Perfect time to drive home would be between 3 and 6 PM on Sunday - everyone else in MA will be watching the Patriots beat Baltimore. Really - no one will be on the road. And a word of caution - once off the highway in NH or VT watch the speed limit signs really carefully. Major revenue source for all those little towns is to randomly raise and lower speed limits - usually below what might seem reasonable - and then hide a bunch of cops everywhere. DD recently got a $135 ticket for going 40 in 25 mph zone - flat, level, straight roadway in non-populated area. (Not endorsing her speeding - she learned a valuable lesson - but speed traps like this are everywhere and will ruin your weekend) |
oh I should say I have an SUV. Am I being silly or wise?

It's the driver, not the vehicle that makes the difference. You aren't going to need ground clearance in 6 inches of snow, and you shouldn't need 4 wheel drive either, unless you get stuck. Maybe you have ABS braking. This is good.
Whatever you drive, don't make any sudden moves: acceleration, braking or steering. Leave lots of room between yourself and the next car. Have plenty of windshield wiper fluid. Take good sunglasses. |
thanks, yup I'm going!!!! Yay, I'll be out on the roads being careful for sure!

thanks all I really appreciate the advice. I'm a great driver in snow, just hate all these ramped up snow predictions not adding up to canceling you know?

We'll be driving North from CT into Boston at the same time you'll be driving off Cape. We'll be fine; we're just going to leave early and take our time. Have a great weekend skiing!

Yes, just take your time and drive carefully...more snow south than north this time it seems. Likely you are already on the road. And on Sunday indeed we will be watching the Patriots outdo the Ravens!
