Cape Cod Striper Fishing -- affordable areas?
Thanks to a tip from starsville, I'm ditching my fishing vacation in Florida (too hot and too many mosquitoes) and looking at Cape Cod instead.
Stripers are my favorite and the summer season looks great. Which areas should I be looking for affordable vacation rentals? (I'm looking at Hyannis and Denis so far on vrbo...) We can't afford high-end accomodations, but we'd love to find a small, charming 1 or 2 bd cottage where we could cook/grill our catch. We would also love to stay in an area where we would be close to a swimming beach where the water isn't stagnant. I see that the high season begins in July -- I'd like to leave as soon as possible for a 4 day trip. Also, we're considering flying into Boston or Providence and renting a car to save money on airfare. Are there any issues/problems with this plan that I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions. |
My husband would applaud your decision. He loves to fish and stripers are his favorite. He's actually hoping to catch some from the jetty at our beach in Brewster later this month. I know that the Boston Globe (boston.com) has a fishing report that he reads at least once a week (don't know which day) that tells exactly where they are running.
Your plan to fly to Providence or Boston and rent a car is fine. Using Brewster (for lack of a better choice) as a guide, the Providence airport would be 1 3/4 hour drive and Logan would be about the same. Be careful when you chose your arrival time if you are going into Boston. Traffic southbound will be bad from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. during the week and you don't want to travel to the Cape on Saturday mornings. With all that said, I might suggest that you try renting a condo at Ocean Edge (find them through weneedavacation.com or cyberrentals.com). They are a bit less expensive than traditional cottages. If you can come up next weekend, you should be able to get a good deal on any cottage that you would find still available on the web. We rent our home and I'd be happy to negotiate with anyone if I still had availability at this point (which I don't!). Good luck! |
thanks for the great links!

Your best bet for a deal will be to get to the homeowner through the cahmber of commerce in the town you want to stay in. I suggest the outer cape for great fishing...you can try www.easthamchamber.com or www.wellfleetchamber.com for houses.
For a personal experience try Captain Barney- Barney Burrell, a Coast Guard licensed captain, will take you fishing and show you around the Nauset Shore. http://www.capecod-sportfishing.com/...n__barney_.htm Or call him at 508-240-0777 For group charters try Rock Harbor Charter Fleet- 508-255-9757 Trips daily. 4 or 8 hour trips for groups in search of bluefish and stripped bass. |
On the pier in Wellfleet, you have several boats who will take people out charter fishing. Check the Wellfleet chambers site, per the advice of the previous poster-there are several summer cottage colonies, not too expensive, close to the pier that are listed with the Chamber, and they will be very helpful. They're open on weekends!

fishee, did you see my additions to your earlier post about cottage rentals?
|
Oh, yes you did. Sorry about that!
Just enjoy a great lobster meal and think of me. Thanks enough (until I can get up there - probably in October) |
Here's another idea I had...stay at Cove Bluffs Motel in Eastham. They have efficiencies and I believe a common grill. Lovely family. We stayed there once when the in-laws place was full. Also, we had friends who stayed there years ago and were in a bad car accident while there. The owners of Cove Bluffs could not have been more kind (drove the husband to the hospital 30 minutes away, etc.). It might just fit the bill. And Eastham is close to Rock Harbor--a great fishing fleet area.

fishee, I called for the price of a 4 hour trip out of Rock Harbor this week for 3 or 4 people and was quoted $500.
www.capecodonline.com (the Cape Cod Times) has a good update on striper fishing every Thursday. It's better now in the Outer Cape area (Eastham, Wellfleet). I don't think much is happening in Hyannis or Dennis. And I see you mentioned "swimming beach"...We have not seen the sun since Monday and have had 55 degree temps and about 10" of rain. It's looking better for next week. If you want to email me at the mikster 70 @ hot mail .com (no spaces) I may be able to help w/rental info. |
