Cape Cod/Nantucket
Thinking of a long weekend to Nantucket (we would be visiting fron NYC): are there any reasonable flight options or are these only out of Boston/Hyannis?
Any recommendations for cute/reasonable b&b's? Are we ok with no car? Also open to recommendations for less obvious Cape destinations (we already went to MV last year). We appreciate quaint towns, nice beach, and seafood! Thanks all! |
There are flights out of LGA but not sure how reasonable they are.
http://www.nantucketchamber.org/visi...there.html#air You're ok without a car but will probably want to take a taxi ride to Sconset at some point if you stay near town. |
thanks for the link! Although it runs about $600 roundtrip, I think I'd rather fly to Paris for that price!
It seems best bet is to drive to Hyannis and fly Cape Air. I heard the ferry is long. Any B&B recommendations (something hidden gem)? thanks!! |
I think there's now a fast ferry as long as you're not taking your car. One problem with flying from Hyannis is frequent fog (as poor JFK Jr. found out the hard way).
Can't help on a b & b as I always rented a house with friends, but a recent thread mentioned the Cliff Lodge and some other places. http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=34786312 |
The fast ferry is mentioned on that link I gave you for flights if you scroll up.

There are two fast ferries that take pasengers from Hyannis to Nantucket, The Grey Lady run by Hyline and the fast ferry run by the Steamship Authority. (The SA has recently had problems with their boat so I would suggest the Hyline Grey Lady instead.). It take aboaut 1 hur and is much friendlier than going on the slow boat from Woodshole. If you decide to fly, the fog is not usually too bad in the umer but spring can be pea soup!

I've taken the Hy-Line fast ferry from Hyannis. It is a surprisingly comfortable and pleasant experience. And it truly is only one hour.
http://www.hy-linecruises.com/ You won't necessarily need a car on Nantucket but you will want to do a little exploring. There are some gorgeous beaches which are reachable by either a paved bike path or shuttle bus (summer only). We really enjoyed renting bikes and riding all over the island. Beware renting a car. We made that mistake to the tune of $200 for one day. You won't get much quainter than Nantucket Town. Just be aware that Nantucket is an expensive island. Lots of really good restaurants, but they think so, too, if the prices they charge are any indication. Not that this has anything to do with anything but one night at dinner (can't remember the restaurant but it was excellent) we were seated next to two couples, who were dressed to the nines, one of the women absolutely dripping in diamonds. They finished their dinner, paid and left. A few minutes later the diamond lady and presumably husband come rushing back in, frantically looking all around their table, on the floor, under the chair cushions, everywhere. A couple of restaurant workers also joined in the search, apologizing to the surrounding diners that they might be disrupting our dinners. Seems the woman was missing an earring. The restaurant seemed rather confident they would find it when they were able to do a thorough search after all the diners had left. I've often wondered if she got that earring back. It was a HUGE dangly diamond earring. That could have been a REALLY expensive dinner for her! |
Another option would be to drive to Providence or New Bedford and fly from there (Cape Air). The ferry suggestions are all accurate, but depending on when you want to go, you may be out of luck, especially if you want to take your car - reservations are made way in advance. If you go mid-week, you would be better off.
Less obvious Cape suggestions - check out Chatham. Further out on the Cape you go, the less crowded it gets (well, sort of). |
You might want to check out a lovely small BB on the outer cape in the National Seashore. It is a gem and, I believe, the only lodging that is actually within the Cape Cod Nairtonal Seashore park. Ask about the "Nantucket" honeymoon cottage for a really special place with ocean view. www.forthillbedandbreakfast .com
