It will depend upon which town . Columbus Day weekend is a "swan song", for many of the lower Cape towns. Wellfleet has it's Oyster Festival the weekend after the holiday, so most everything is open till then, the same for P'town, Chatham, Orleans and Brewster.
Weather is cool, ,but usually sunny, fall is usually lovely. Not swimming weather, though fine for kayaking, tennis, golf, hiking. etal.

October is a fabulous time to visit the outer cape. Many places remain open until the first of the year although, as capecodshanty mentioned, after Columbus Day some of the strickly summer places close. Don't forget Eastham (located between Orleans and Wellfleet) in your search of places to stay and see. The best beaches in the USA are in Eastham (unbiased opinion :-) also, you will want to visit the Cape Cod Natonal Seashore Visitor's Center to get a real feeling for the place and its history. Don't miss a walk around Fort Hill and through the Red Maple Swamp which will be in glory during October. The weather is variable so layers of clothing are a must. It can start off at 50 degrees and reach 75 by mid-day. If it rains, it can be very damp so bring a slicker ....umbrellas are useless against the Cape Cod winds! I recommend that you check out the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast. www.forthillbedandbreakfast.com Their cottage has a view of the ocean and fireplace...seems like it would be very cozy in October.

I had to go to the Cape for a wedding in November a couple of years ago, so I got up there a few days in advance. Even in November it was warm enough to go hiking with the right clothing, and we really enjoyed not having any traffic. :) There were enough places open for us to eat, although Provincetown was noticeably a ghost town compared to how I imagine it is in the summer. We stayed in Orleans, and the wedding was in Chatham, and plenty of places were still open in both towns.

Well, Ptown will be hopping that week, but unless you are a gay Midwestern girl you probably don't want to plan to be stay in Provincetown. It's Women's Week in Ptown. Then again, lots of shows and stuff going on - so you may indeed enjoy it.
