My family will be visiting Cape Cod next summer for the first time. We are looking for a nice, clean, family friendly hotel on the ocean/bay hopefully with a indoor/outdoor pool.

Has anyone stayed at the Ocean Mist in Yarmouth? Does anyone have any suggestions for other hotels?

I'm considering staying in Chatham, Dennis, or Yarmouth but am open to any other suggestions...

I think you are smart to be planning now as the better places get booked early. Here are some places that meet most or all of your criteria:

Chatham: Chatham Bars Inn; Wequasett Inn.

Dennis: Lighthouse Inn; Soundings.

Yarmouth: Red Jacket; Blue Water.

Brewster: Ocean Edge Resort.

Provincetown: Sandcastle Resort; Provincetown Inn.

In Hyannis, the Cape Codder Hotel is a very popular family resort. It is not on the water but has the 2nd largest indoor wave-pool on the East Coast, 3 restaurants, and a spa.

Another very popular family motel is the All Seasons Motor Inn, S. Yarmouth. Not on the water but has indoor and outdoor pool, two dining rooms plus many other features.

I am not familiar with Ocean Mist.

I visit the Cape every summer, don't stay in hotels though, we camp at Nickerson state park. I can say this, I have visited every town on the Cape, Hyannis is very congested, traffic is horrible! Once outside of Hyannis, it quiets down. There are many places to stay that vary in price that are on the water. Chatham is definitely upscale but very nice. Dennis, Yarmouth, Brewster, Orleans, etc. are more reasonable. I would recommend visiting P-Town, it's like Mardi Gra on Fri. & Sat. night, street performers, shows, etc. Also go on a whale watch from P-Town, if you want to be up close and personal with a whale, this is the way to do it, an awesome experience, whales are everywhere! I would not bother with Martha's Vineyard unless you are staying there or visiting friends who are.

How about a day trip to Nantucket?
Can you rent bikes when you get there?
Is it worth it?

A day trip from Hyannis to Nantucket is very doable and I highly recommend it. There are several ferry options including a high speed ferry which will cut your travel time in half but really add to your expenses - its a question of which do you have more of time or money.

Once you get to Nantucket you can easily rent bikes. The town is lovely, filled with shops, restaurants and historic homes to tour.

My favorite thing to do is to climb to the top of one of the church steeples to get a great view of the island. I can't remember what the name of the church is but found it by reading an ad in a tourist newspaper. The church collects a donation of a buck or two. There are binoculars at the top.
