Can't afford Historic District Savannah....help!
 

This is my second attempt at posting so please forgive me if it appears twice. The bottom line is I just can't afford the high dollar prices to stay in the Historic District. I'm a single female traveling alone and just going to do some sightseeing for a couple of days. Can anyone recommend an safe area where I can get a clean cheap room for about 60 bucks a night? I just don't know the area well enough and as a single female traveling alone who worries a lot, just thought I'd see in anyone could help out! Thanks a million!!!

Just to clarify, I am wanting to know of a specific area away from the Historic District that is safe. You tell me what is good and I'll find a hotel there. For example, I've heard of the Southside area. How safe is that area? When browsing the Best Western webiste, I found a couple of their properties in my price range. Which would be safer...Eisenhower or Gateway Blvd? <BR> <BR>Also, any suggestions on parking? I've heard the parking situation isn't good for someone like me who will not already be staying downtown. <BR> <BR>Any advice I could get would be greatly appreciated. I tried to do a keyword search on Savannah but didn't have any luck. Not sure if I was doing it right but I got results from all over the country even though I clicked on Georgia. Technology...go figure! hehehe

There is a Days Inn in the historic district that is nothing fancy but in a good location (155 Meeting St.). If you do a search you will find at least one or two reports of people who stayed there and said it was fine, not great, but decent for the price. I personally know someone who stayed there by himself on business and he said it was just OK, nothing special, but well-located and the price was right. I don't know what the rates are at the moment, but you can find it at www.daysinn.com. Good luck. Charleston is wonderful, but to be honest, you'll enjoy it a lot more if you stay in or near the historic district where you can walk to everything. <BR> <BR>

Whoops -- just realized you asked about Savannah, not Charleston. Don't know if there's one in Savannah, but still recommend checking the daysinn.com website and checking for promotions.

One suggestion would be trying roomsavers.com. They have speacials for the Savannah area. Most are out of the historic district, but not too far to drive in and leave the car while sight seeing.

Stephanie...you have two threads going requesting the same info. Check your other thread (currently #31). I replied to your question regarding Eisenhower and Gateway, and parking locations in that thread. <BR> <BR>You almost have to give specific addresses to check safety. Not all of Southside is good. Avoid addresses around Oglethorpe Mall. Avoid anything between Park Ave and Victory Drive. You WILL have to drive through this area however if you are staying southside, including the Eisenhower Best Western. Avoid all areas between the airport (excluding the immediate airport properties) and the western fringe of the historic district. <BR> <BR>As long as you are checking Best Westerns...did you look at pricing for the Best Western on Bay St? It's a bit tired, but on the fringe of the historic district so you won't need your car and you wont' worry either about the area you are staying in or driving through. The few extra dollars it might cost would be worth the peace of mind (plus you'll saved about $10/day on parking and gas).

Just a quick note to thank everyone for their input. I checked into each hotel that was suggested but, overall, I found that my options were still going to be about $69-79 a night and then I'd still have to pay to park so I went ahead and splurged on the Days Inn on W. Bay St for $99 a night. OliveOyl, thanks for your detailed tips. I was able to go back and find both of your responses. Thanks everybody!
