Canoeing for beginners

hi there we will be visiting Texas in the summer and will be staying in various locations.....my kids 14 11 and 8 are mad to try canoeing and i would like some advice as to where we can try this ..... obviously a nice gentle paddle would be in order ..... also would like to know if possible if there is some reasonable accommodation nearby.....thanks in advance

Hmmm. Txas isn't exactly known for its canoeing. You should really try northeastern Minnesota, or parts of the Carolinas. The only place for canoeing in TX would be perhaps, Big Bend national park. In the future, perhaps you might want to look further north for canoeing vacations

You can go canoeing in Austin on Town Lake (Colorado River).

There are lots of canoe/ kayak options in Texas, particularly in the Hill Country. Do a google search and you'll find options.

Here's a nice article I just found on my favorite areas in the Texas Hill Country. Nice reading - and gives you a taste of the area -

Helpful Hint : Only stand in a canoe when you're on terra firma. Standing while in the water = falling into the water. Never done it, but I've seen it 3x.

Did you and your family decide which route to take for the 6 week visit? Happy planning!

The canoe rentals in Austin are in Zilker Park, right near the kids playground and train ride. You can paddle around the creek off of the Town Lake - lots of turtles sunning, ducks, occasionally a water snake, + fish, etc.

In central Texas Austin - San Antonio you should also make sure you go toobing, or tubing. Best places are San Marcos and even better is New Braunfels/Gruene - closer to San Antonio.

I am sure there are many other places in TX to go toobing as spring fed or dam fed creeks/rivers are quite common.
