cannon beach tidepools in August
 

Only interest in Cannon Beach from Cathlamet is to see tidepools. Are they there everyday and at what time? Not interested in just beach stuff that I can get in Buffalo, NY (yes-we have beaches)

You have beaches, but not tides. LOL Tidepools are left when high tide recedes, leaving water in recesses. High and low tides change daily so you'll need to find a tide table, usually available online, or most newspapers specific to a beach, then check the hours when tide is going out!

I have a tide table right here. If you post your dates I can let you know what times.

8/27 to Cannon! - Originally was going to ONP for 3 days with kids 9,12,14. After reading many posts, I got talked into a day trip to Cannon for tidepools and then St Helen & Rainier (staying in Cathlamet a few days first) Do you agree?

You'll encounter sealife galore in the tidepools--starfish of all colors and anemone.
While in the are, you'll be missing one of the most magnificent coastal sights if you don't go into Ecola State Park and view the beach from on high.

I'm definately there including Escola. Did you have the tidepool schedule for 8/27. Does it change drastically 1 day prior or 1 day after.

The time of the tides changes only by minutes day by day.

Just in case your schedule changes a bit, here are the low tide times for a few days.

8/26--11:58am
8/27--12:59pm
8/28--2:12pm

The other low tides are in the middle of the night, so figured those were not real applicable, lol!

Acutally, yes I do. The tide tables are in the back of a Cannon Beach magazine that i keep in my files. Anyway, the low tides for those dates are--

9/19--7:59am and 8:32pm
9/20--8:36am and 9:18pm
9/21--9:13am and 10:05pm

Doreenwol, hope you've got at least seven days allocated for your Northwest trip. Otherwise, you're going to be racing from one of your scenic destinations to another and with little time to savor any of them. As for Cannon Beach, it's the Carmel of Oregon, in my opinion, and well worth any time you can afford to spend there.

doreenwol, the access to the tidepool at Haystack Rock is at Gower St. and Second St. During the summer months there are sometimes volunteers for the Haystack Rock Awareness Program. They are on the beach offeirng interpretive information about the tidepools. :)

You may want to pick up the "Guide to Oregon's Rocky Intertidal Habitat" from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. There are also guides available at the bookstores here in CB.

Remember that the rocks can be slippery, sharp and covered with life ,so watch your step as you explore the tidepools. Walk only on the bare rock or sand to avoid crushing the live animals and plants. If you're not satisfied with what you see, come on over the Seaside aquarium where you can view much marine life. You can also feed the seals with paid admission to the aquarium. Have a great time and let us know how it goes!! ***kim*** ((#))

The volunteers that do the interpretive talks are there during low tides all year long, not just in the summer. Of course if there is a strong storm they don't come out though, lol!

If you've got the time at Ecola, check out the tide pools at the south end of Indian Beach. The area's not quite as large as at the base of Haystack, but the tidepools are nice, and there are usually fewer people around (no volunteer interpretive folks tho).

doreenwol, if you like Mexican food, head over to La Fiesta, located right across the street from Mo's. We had about a 30 minute wait, but that was on a Sat. night. They have great food and reallly good peach margeuritas! I hope you have fun tide-pooling! ***kim*** ((*))

I've lost the post, but someone mentioned going to Ft. Canby St. Park near Ilwaco - 2 mile hike to Beards Hollow for tidepools. I think this is in the Long Beach area which would save about 1 hour driving in each direction. Is this a good subsitute for Cannon Beach tidepools. We are going for the afternoon.
