Cannon Beach, OR: July or August?

We are definitely going for at least a couple of days (part of a week-long+ trip to the area) and wanted input fom others in terms of whether there would be a major difference, weather and otherwise, between being in Cannon Bach in July vs. August.

Any input would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

In August, you will have a better chance at better weather. Course our coast doesn't get hot, but the chance of rain is much less is August. Just to give you an idea, we say that our summers do not begin until July 5th;)

MMS, thank you very much for this info. I've never been to that part of the Pacific coast before and really want to maximize the "chances" of decent weather. It isn't that I think foggy, overcast weather (at the beach) is "bad" because I don't but I do assocxiate that sort of weather more with non-Summer time. Am looking forward to the trip.

In your lodging search, consider the town of Seaside. I really like walking on the Prommenade there. A short distance off the Prom you can see the site of Lewis & Clarks' Saltworks. This is where the Corps of Discovery boiled seawater to make salt to preserve meat for their trip home.
Enjoy your trip to Oregon whenever you come.

Dukey--Glad to help:)

You mention Cannon Beach, which is my personal favorite. Very nice town, great beach, lots of choices for lodging/dining/shopping, nice atmosphere.

Seaside is only about 10 minutes north of Cannon Beach, but with an entirely different feel if that interests you. It is not my cup of tea, if you will.

Tom and MMS,

Thank you both for your additional comments. I have read the several previous posts comparing Seaside to Cannon Beach and in our household there would be plenty of enjoyment in BOTH sorts of places and for obviously differing reasons. I realize it is hard for some folks to understand that in fact we like both the so-called "tacky tourist" beach places with the boardwalks, the taffy stands, the french fry sellers, etc., etc., as much as we enjoy the more quiet and peaceful places.

I guess we are lucky.

If you can make it here in Seaside on July 4th, there is an awesome firework show! We also enjoy daily bike rides and walks on the prom here. The sun is shining brightly today, it's gorgeous here! Let me know if you would dining recs for the Seaside/Cannon Beach area, we have several favorites. We just enjoyed the Smoked Mussels at Ecola Seafood in Cannon Beach this past Sat. after playing a round of golf in Manzanita. I hope you have a great trip! ***kim*** ((#))

If you are here for the 4th of July - and are in Cannon Beach - please be aware that fireworks are not allowed in Cannon Beach. We don't want to disturb the wildlife on Haystack Rock.

As kim said, there are fireworks a short distance away in Seaside.

There is a really fun, small town parade on the 4th in Cannon BEach, and other fun things going on in town. EVOO cooking school usually serves strawberry shortcake - always a must for us!

We went to the Oregon coast and Crater National Park about 7 years ago for 2 weeks in mid July. We experienced a cool day of 60 and a heat wave and minimum rain. You will love it!!

Deladeb, thanks for that information. We are still determining which month will work best for us. Given the geography and the general weather patterns we will go and hope for the best. If we get "bad" weather, well that's a chance one takes but I am convinced that in almost ANY weather the trip will be worthwhile.
