From someone I know in Cancun:
President Fox said that Cancun will be back on its feet by December (not sure if that's wishful thinking on his part). He's asked for $1.1 billion in reconstruction and recovery aid.
40% of buildings have suffered structural damage in Cancun and looting is widespread.
Cancun Intl. Airport is closed for now but expected to reopen tomorrow.
Tourists for now are being bused to Merida to fly out of there.

Thank you very much for your help i will keep an eye on the updates and hope they can begin their lives back as soon as possible and hope the hotels are up and running shortly, Many Thanks

The bad news is that The Moon Palace is right between Cancun and Playa del Carmen (Porto Moreles).

The good news is that the Moon Palace is constructed out of concrete and rebar.

OldSouthernBelle Oct 24th, 2005 08:24 AM

Anyone know if mikemo lives in/near the affected area? Wondering if he is alright?

Belle

mikemo Oct 24th, 2005 08:41 AM

Hola Belle,
We are 100's of miles away in the state of Guanajuato, city of San Miguel de Allende in virtually the geographic center of the country at 6700 ft.
All's well here.

mikemo Oct 24th, 2005 12:04 PM

GT, Easy enough to do and certainly way less expensive than DFW.
Check out the tripadvisor forums SMdA.

We have a vacation booked at the Royal Sands for the second week in November. Has anyone heard how the Royal Resorts came through this horrible storm?

BeachBoi Oct 25th, 2005 05:09 AM

According to a newspaper report this morning, 90% of Cancun/PDC/Cozumel hotels have sustained "damage".Some beaches have disappeared and many roads are submerged. The Mexican government is estimating rebuilding will take 4 months.

Kalik Oct 25th, 2005 11:29 AM

rubymurray Oct 26th, 2005 02:07 AM

Hi I found a good site www.palaceresorts.com and it gave me some good information, it said that the Moon Palace is ok only minor damage but the hotel is up and running and it was one the the hotels that gave shelter to the people while Wilma went through, it also gives information on other hotels in the area that were badly affected, hope this helps. I am going to the Moon Palace in April if anyone goes before than i would appreciate any feedback.

Kalik Oct 26th, 2005 07:24 AM

Would you please tell me where the Moon Palace is located in relations to the Royal Resorts in Cancun? Thanks

rubymurray Oct 26th, 2005 08:06 AM

Hi Kalik, i also had a lot of trouble getting onto the palace site so i typed in damage to the Moon Palace Mexico and it comes up with different options underneath them there is a section saying (Cached) click on that and it will display the page for you. Have a great time in November i have also been before and cant wait to go back in April for my Honeymoon, look forward to your feedback once you have returned.

Hi Txvisitor i am not sure where the Moon Palace is in relation to the Royal resorts it is between cancun and Playa del Carmen, it is on the opposite side of the town to the Cancun Palace, hope this helps a little, Many Thanks.

Kalik Oct 26th, 2005 10:54 AM

txvisitor. I have taken a taxi to Cancun and it took us 15 min to get there. I am just not sure in which direction we wre going. Hope this helps a little.

rubymurray and kalik, I am supposed to be going to Moon Palace on Nov. 8th. I still cannot get onto the palaceresorts.com webpage. You say you found out that the hotel is up and running from the webpage? I don't know how it could be up and running if all the phones are still down. Have you talked to anyone there? We figured that we'd have to reschedule. Please let me know anything you know about the moon palace.

rubymurray Oct 27th, 2005 01:10 AM

Hi Christylynn
If you type in damage to the Moon Palace it will bring up all options for you and that is where it stats that the Moon Palace is ok and all restaurants are up and running i am also going to phone my travel agent today to confirm this, hope this helps have a great time.

txvisitor Oct 27th, 2005 03:38 AM

christylynn Oct 27th, 2005 03:47 AM

Rubymurray,
I don't know what my deal is, but I can't seem to find that page... Could you send me a link to it? I don't know if links work over the forum, but my email address is [email protected] I was also wondering if you could let me know what your travel agent says when you talk to him/her today! We booked through the hotel and we haven't been able to get a hold of anyone. We are starting to get really worried because our date is coming up fast. Thank-You so much for your help!

rubymurray Oct 27th, 2005 04:48 AM

Hi Christylynn i have just sent you the home page that i managed to find on the Moon Palace, it is a very difficult site to get on but if anyone is having difficulty type in damage to Moon palace and click on the links called (cached) underneath the headline and it will appear or send me your email address and i will try to forward it to you, hope this helps.

Kalik Oct 27th, 2005 09:07 AM

[email protected]

karens Oct 27th, 2005 09:27 AM

Hi all. Just read an article on USA Today that said the beach is gone. But I can't find more detail - is the entire strip of beach gone?

My husband and I are reverting to our travel personalities. I'm researching, and he's saying "everything will be fine". Tourism is Cancun's major industry. Yeah, I know that, but how are they going to get a beach (by Feb.?)

Kalik Oct 27th, 2005 12:19 PM

Rubymurray,
I found the site on Palace Resorts. For some reason yesturday the page was not coming up.Thanks Again,Kalik
I am still pullimg for Moon palace Then, when I get there I will be at the bar doing shots.

Kalik Oct 27th, 2005 01:24 PM

To All,
I found a good site with lots of good info. I am not sure how much is true ,but atleast it's from someone in the Cancun Hotel Buss. Enjoy!

www.tripso.com

christylynn Oct 27th, 2005 02:53 PM

Kalik,
I finally got to the palaceresorts webpage, but it looks like the last entry was oct 23rd regarding Wilma...Where does it say that the moon palace is up and running??

christylynn Oct 27th, 2005 05:54 PM

Rubymurray and Kalik,
The information you are looking at is not from hurricane Wilma, IT is the damage report from hurricane Emily back in July. I have heard that Moon Palace will not be expected to open until the first week of February, and even that is tentative. I heard this information from someone who just spoke to a palace sales rep.

yzergirl Oct 27th, 2005 07:25 PM

I wonder how Tulum fared - such a treasure -

Also, I am trying to find a long-term rental on the Central Plateau of Mexico and seem to only come up with condo's - any ideas?

Mikemo - isn't that one of your areas?

Thanks for any help on this -

Yzergirl

schmerl Oct 28th, 2005 03:20 AM

Talum is further south and faired a lot better than Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Kalik Oct 28th, 2005 07:04 AM

To all: I just got through to Palace Resorts toll free#. They said that they just open there lines two hours ago and they too have not been informed on the damage done to Moon Palace. They said to call back Monday afternoon.I feel bad b/c I think she thought that I was going to give her a hard time. I know it is not her fault. All you can do is understand. She sounded really sad too.

Little_Man Oct 28th, 2005 07:45 AM

karens: the entire stretch of beach isn't gone -- I see some in front of the Hilton in internet pics I've found, but it does look like a great deal of it is gone, with the ocean coming right up to the sea wall in hotels at the top of the "7". I can find no pictures of the beach in front of my favorite hotel, the JW Marriott.
It is so incredibly sad. Cancun plans to spend $20 million to rebuild the beaches, but in some spots it looks like an impossible task. :(.

Little_Man Oct 28th, 2005 07:47 AM

go to this website for pics: http://www.entertainment-plus.net/
click on hurricane updates.

ltt Oct 28th, 2005 08:02 AM

does anybody have a website that might have current photos of the area. the site listed above is great but it was 1-2 days after the hurricane. wonder what it looks like now.
