Can You Wear White Pants in Miami before Labor Day?

Silly question, I know, but it's a fashion "no-no" in NY to wear white pants before Labor Day. However, in Miami, it's warm year round and white seems more appropriate down there even now...What do you think?

I wasn't aware that white was allowed at all within the NYC city limits , maybe I'm just a crude Chicagoan who doesn't move in the circles of fashionistas, but wear whatever you want, seriously. Not to mention, hasn't some of those traditional "don't wear white before X date" or "if you don't drink x wine with y dish you are a cretin" been relaxed as of recent years?

I've always been sort of amused by some of the fashion questions that are asked (e.g. may I wear blue jeans to the opera or to a 4 star resturant? uh... no) Although I would question the wisdom of dressing in all black under a blazing hot sun.

Go to one of the places listed at the following website and you won't have to worry about it:

In Miami - as long as you're wearing some pants (beach excepted of course - then a teeny thong will do) no one will care what color they are.

Oh my gosh... This is 2005 Wear whatever the h_ll you want to wear. The people who might have an issue with it don't know and will never see you again anyway. It should not matter WHERE you are. Carpe diem!

I think people just get too hung up with the "what to wear in a city thing". Remember, people actually LIVE in that city and go about their daily lives. I mean the person you see in sweats on a Saturday morning might actually be a New Yorker!!! It's the weekend, they went out to jog and stopped in at the market to pick up a few things before going home, etc. I personally would not run around New York in sweats because I don't live there and I would NOT be out jogging. I'm sure lots of New Yorkers own white pants and wear them when they feel like it. We all tend to stress over this: will I look OK? What do the "natives" wear? I'm the same, but try to keep it in perspective.

And Miami is just not a place where people are hung up on this kind of thing. Anything that looks nice is fine down there.

We wear white all the time here. It's too hot here, so sleeveless shirts, tank tops, strappy sandals, and shorts are always worn in any color. I've lived here my whole life and I had never even heard of this rule until I went to graduate school in Georgia.

I actually had this question a couple of months ago. I was coming from the New York area wondering about my black and khaki colored clothes.

After a bit of reluctance, I decided to wear white and bright pink of all things in January! I actually saw several outfits in my colors and would point out that fact to my husband!

Apparently, you can wear white and bright colors year round in Miami.

Went to Miami and Southern Florida in mid-May and wore white pants, you cannot survive in dark colors in Florida. Its too friggin hot (95 degrees when I went). People aren't slaves to fashion like NYC. I live in SW PA and wouldn't wear white shoes until Memorial Day but I wear linen by late April if its 80 something by that time. I dress for the weather and comfort.

just to keep this silly thread going: whatever happened to the "Full Cleveland"? I see none in SW Florida anymore. The first time I heard this expression I about died laughing. Wonder how many on Fodors will know what the full Cleveland is. Hint: it is definitely white and clothing related. LMF

By all means wear the white pants, they will look nice next to your husband's white patent loafers.

My Miami friends tell me that people there care more about what people wear than in New York. It has to be upscale or designer and they can't see you wearing it twice. The kids have Gucci and Coach backpacks. Oh and they wear boots and coats when it's 50 degrees. As a tourist, they might be more easy on you. I was in Florida (not Miami) in January and it was a bit cool 60 degrees ant people were wearing sweaters.
