Can you use frequent flier miles for One Way fares?

Hi -

am going to ask this question to the airlines I have FF miles tomorrow (the service centers are closed right now)....

Does anyone know if Northwest or Continental offers this option?

Thanks!

You will waste your miles on a 1-way ticket, I believe. Most are only good roundtrip.

Unless airlines have changed their rules in the last few months, all airlines charge a full "mile" fare for a one way trip.
In other words, you'll be using enough miles to fly roundtrip and you will only be going one way.

better to buy a cheap round-trip fare (saturday night stay) and don't use the return leg. Typically much less than one way fare.

I hadn't thought about it, but doesn't that seem, actually, pretty stupid on the part of the airlines? They could get people to burn up more miles if they had a system that was, for example, 15,000 miles for a domestic one-way, 25,000 RT. What is the downside of that, or am I being short sighted?

If they did it your way they would "burn" 15,000 miles.

If they continue as they do now, you will have to either come up with cash or "burn" 25,000 miles.

The current way works out better for them.
