Can you renew your driver's license at a AAA office in your state?

I was told I didn't know what I was talking about on another thread in regards to renewing a driver's license at a AAA office. I am able to do just that at my local AAA office in Connecticut and now I'm curious if others can do the same in their states.

Can you and where are you from? You don't have to be a AAA member to do this in CT.

Thanks, Emily

Californians can renew their registration at the AAA office but I think you are stuck with DMV offices if you need to retest or lose your license.

Rich Oct 18th, 2012 12:24 PM

Not in Texas . .

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 12:25 PM

We can renew licenses and registrations at selected AAA offices in Connecticut.

spirobulldog Oct 18th, 2012 12:35 PM

Not in Oklahoma

Miramar Oct 18th, 2012 12:47 PM

Yes, at certain AAA locations in Massachusetts. The procedure is the same as visiting the RMV--you can do the eye test, get your photo taken and then they give you a paper/temporary license and then the new "real" license comes in the mail in 5-10 days.

Not in CA unless the rules have changed that I had not heard about. AAA can do most DMV transactions but not driving tests/liceense

My Oregon CDL will expire on my birthday next year. At least a month before my birthday the Oregon DMV will send a renewal form which I will have to take to the local DMV which is closer to me than a AAA office. I pay for my vehicle renewal registrations online and they mail me the new registrations.
I did use my AAA card to get a discount on Amtrak travel. Now that I'm 62 I get 15% off. I got the Lifetime Senior Pass for $10 to get into all the NP's.

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 12:54 PM

In CT, the photo is taken and a valid and genuine license is given at that time. Takes about half an hour. Love the convenience. The DMV lines in my area are hours long.

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 12:56 PM

Did you check CA? I googled and got a 'Yes, you can renew your license at these southern California AAA offices', but was re-routed back to the CT AAA site when I clicked on that link. If you're in California, would you google 'California driver's license renewal at AAA' and see if you see the link I did? Thanks!

LoveMyLab Oct 18th, 2012 01:08 PM

Yes in Florida. The appointment was easy to make, waiting was minimal. Such a better experience than waiting in line at the Drivers License Bureau.

Cranachin Oct 18th, 2012 01:15 PM

Nevada has "DMV in a Box"!

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 01:23 PM

So far the DMV in CT, Florida, Nevada, and Massachusetts have an arrangement with AAA to renew licenses and perhaps registrations.

What about the rest of the States? Thanks, everyone!

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 01:25 PM

tomfuller: did you check online re. license renewal at AAA in your state?

nyer Oct 18th, 2012 01:25 PM

Not in NY State either.

Looks like it's not anywhere near universal, but it never occurred to me that this was an option anywhere. In those states where it's allowed, does that mean that the DMV sets up a satellite office in an AAA office? Since it's a government issued ID, I would think that government employees would have to handle all the paperwork, not AAA or any other business or organization's employees.

Cranachin Oct 18th, 2012 01:27 PM

Actually, the answer for Florida is "sometimes".

The Pembroke Pines AAA office has a DHSMV service center "co-located" at it. This is the case in some other cities as well (e.g. Tampa), but in many (maybe most) cities it is not the case (including Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami).

nytraveler Oct 18th, 2012 01:54 PM

Not in NY. You can do it by mail or online - as long as you send in a signed certificate from your eye MD that your vision has been tested. Otherwise it's the DMV - a wait of 2 hours at "License Express" versus 3 or more at the general offices.

tomfuller Oct 18th, 2012 02:02 PM

My Oregon/Idaho AAA Guidebook says that the local offices can provide an International Driving Permit which is a translation of your valid Drivers License into 11 different languages.
Lots of different services but none that require DMV approval.

sf7307 Oct 18th, 2012 02:08 PM

I googled what you asked and got the Automobile Club of Southern California site, which had a chart of DMV services they provide in CA, NV and UT, and drivers license renewal is only available in NV.

tracys2cents Oct 18th, 2012 02:11 PM

California 877-428-2277

"we do not handle any drivers license or I.D card transactions. We DO offer registration renewal, transfers of ownership, stickers, personalized plates and handicapped plates and placards".

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 02:51 PM

Californians are able to renew online or through the mail. Even better than AAA or the DMV!

sf7307 Oct 18th, 2012 03:08 PM

That's true, except I've exhausted my online renewals and have to go in this year -- I think I have to take the written test (I've had my drivers license for 43 years, and have never had a moving violation ticket, and only been in one accident, so I think I know the rules, but they also ask pretty detailed questions, so I'll study up. Fortunately I have an appointment, so I won't have to wait in line long).

yestravel Oct 18th, 2012 03:59 PM

DC you can do online and after a certain number of online renewals you must got to the DMV. also know that in MD you cannot renew thru the AAA.

EmilyPost Oct 18th, 2012 04:11 PM

Anyone know about the State of Washington? Seattle area?

mlgb Oct 18th, 2012 04:35 PM

Renewing a CA Drivers License through the mail or online is possible only if you don't need an address change or retest (usually due to medical conditions or being flagged for unsafe driving habits!) It still takes forever to get the new license back ( 60 days now).

sf7307, was your accident recent? that may be why they sent you for a retest.

sf7307 Oct 18th, 2012 05:15 PM

No, the accident was 24 years ago!

Pat_in_Mich Oct 19th, 2012 04:02 AM

We can't renew at AAA in Michigan but we can do it by mail every other time if we don't have any moving violations.

VidaNaPraia Oct 19th, 2012 08:48 AM

It never occurred to me that this was an option in MA.

J62 Oct 19th, 2012 09:27 AM

Nope, not in NY - which is where the OP in the other thread was from...

nanabee Oct 19th, 2012 12:45 PM

Do AAA offices actually renew and grant CA drivers licenses, or do they just do the paperwork that the client (or driver) would normally submit to the DMW?

Hence a way of making money for AAA and saving the driver the time and energy of renewing their licenses?

Are we talking about driver licenses or identification cards thru the DMV?

nanabee Oct 19th, 2012 12:56 PM

Regardless of what the web sites say, I just spoke to a person at our local AAA via phone. She said you absolutely can NOT renew your drivers license through them. The reason is that it is a government issued ID and only the government can issue it, not a private corporation.

She said that AAA can do any and all services that you normally could do via mail for you. Such as transfer of car title, license plates, etc.

I asked if this was true for all AAA offices thruout the US and she said yes.

So if you wait until the last minute to renew an expired drivers license and call or go to the AAA offices you will not get a valid driver's license. You can only get one thru the DMV.

Cranachin Oct 19th, 2012 01:27 PM

Nanabee,

The person you spoke to at AAA was right—about California. Obviously she is misinformed about the rest of the country (or else there was a misunderstanding between the two of you).

In some other states (such as Connecticut, where the OP lives) you CAN renew a license through AAA. After all, RENEWAL is something "you normally could do through the mail" (or via the Internet) in many states. Certainly AAA cannot offer driver's tests and issue first-time licenses!

For CT, MA, and RI, see the AAA Southern New England website

http://www.southernnewengland.aaa.co...s/registry.php

Licenses can be renewed and duplicate licenses and IDs can be issued through at least SOME AAA offices in those states.

So indeed AAA cannot issue you a license, but they CAN issue you a temporary renewal that is valid until you receive you new one in the mail. The state DMV and AAA must have some kind of agreement that allows this, or else AAA would not be doing it!

From the posts above, you will also see that in certain Florida cities the DHSMV actually has mini-offices AT AAA, so you certainly can do license renewals at those AAA locations. And in Nevada the DMV has kiosks at some (all?) AAA offices that allow you to renew licenses. So in some AAA offices in those two states, at least, you evidently can walk out with your actual new license.

EmilyPost Oct 19th, 2012 02:22 PM

I asked if this was true for all AAA offices thruout the US and she said yes.

nanabee: you have it right for your state but that's not correct for others. Cranachin has given the correct information.
