Can you help with these New York hotels?
 

Hi,
Taking hubby for the weekend to new york city, its his first time there and our anniversary. Want something traditional new york, close to everything, but not in time square. So far considering Michelangelo, Affinia Dumont, Trump Towers, Hilton Time Square. Our price range is around $400 to $500. Thanks for any help.

Yes, please do not stay in Times Square.

Inevitably, when visitors complain that New York is crowded/dirty/loud, they stayed in Times Square.

The Hilton you mention is right in TImes Sq. so it will be touristy and congested in that area The Affinia gets good reviews but the lcoation is nothing special. If you mean the Trump Iternational Hotel & Tower, that's in a very best location compared to the others, and a room with a central park view would be great (although this hotel appears to be pricier than the others you mention). Michelangelo is also in a decent location, still close to the theater district/times sq area, but a little more removed than the Hilton.

ALso, there is no 1 location close to everything. As long as you're near public trasnportation, you can get almost anywhere, pretty quickly and easily. Most hotels are near some transportation.

For something special go for Trump. Or Mandarin Oriental.

But you don;t say when you're coming. Unless it;s soon the $500 won;t be enough and you'll have to go for something more modest.

We were in New York in May and stayed
four nights at the Library Hotel. It is
very nice and a great mid-town location
at Madison at 41st st. We could walk to
Central Park, Empire State Building,
Grand Central Station, etc. Breakfast
and evening wine and cheese included.

We stayed at the Hilton New York last week, through Priceline. This is not the Hilton Times Square and we liked the location of this Hilton. The rooms were very nice, and I think with your budget you could get something upgraded from what we had, which was still very nice.

Don't know if you can get the Essex House with a park view within your budget, but we thought it was exceptional. We were married from there.

We have stayed several times in the Michelangelo and returning again this year. We love it for several reasons: it's near but not in Times Sq, so we can walk to theater and good restaurants; the hotel rooms were lovely, bathrooms excellent (nice tubs and robes), quiet, lovely piano player in lobby bar/cafe - a good place to rest late in the day after touring or after dinner/theater. Only thing is I think breakfasts are pricey and not exceptional and there are lovely places for breakfast/brunch if you want something special and loads of them for a quick, inexpensive bite.

For something special for an anniversary, and a bit romantic, I still love Cafe des Artistes - and they have a nice brunch and then you can walk across the street and into Central Park. Romantic dinners also. Link to that is cafenyc.com if you want to check it out.

If you end up at Michelangelo, check out their web rates before you call, tell them it's your anniversary, ask for an upgrade - it wasn't even our anniversary and both times we've been there we asked and received ! (But it wasn't a busy time, it was after New Years and in January) but you never know :)
