Can you help me plan my ride to Nags Head from NJ?

Here's some background...I am taking my 2 daughters (ages 4 and 2) to Nags Head on Sunday, the 9th, for a week. I will then be 32 weeks pregnant as well (yes, I'm nuts!). I need to know the fastest route there from South Jersey. Also, the route needs to have a lot of stop off points for restroom use/eating stops. Lastly, are there any parts of the trek in which we will hit long periods without any access to restrooms? If so, where's a good place to stop prior to it? Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

I have been driving from Jersey to NC for years with 4 kids. This is the route I take: NJ Turnpike south to Delaware Memorial Bridge. Get on 13 South (this will turn into 1 south near junction 71).Remain on 1 to Dover, DEL. Near Dover AFB get on 113 South (1 turns into 113).Near Pocomoke City, MD get on 13 South. Stay on 13 South and follow signs for Chesapeake Bay Bridge. After bridge continue on 13 a few miles then get on 64 East.
Get off 64 at 168 South/ exit 291B Elizabeth City/Manteo (DON’T get off 290B).Then get on 158 E to the Outerbanks. It Sounds complicated but it's very easy. Lots of places to stop. It takes me exactly 7 hrs 15 minutes from North Jersey. I usually leave at 5AM though. Good luck!

Those are excellent directions Gail gave you. That's the way I would go from Central Jersey.

Just a quick reply. It is a good idea to leave early. I go to the Outer Banks 3-4 times/year from Pennsylvania. Whenever I leave past 10:00 am, I encounter traffic in both Washington D.C. area and the Norfolk area.

Also, I like to stop at the restaurant in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I like their clam chowder and crab cakes.

Finally, even though is costs $10 to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, that route is the only way to shave off 100 miles.
