Can we just show up in Kauai this Saturday w/out a reservation?

We arrive in LIH this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (flying from NYC and connecting in LAX). I have checked condos and it seems that prices are going down - they have gone done in one development in Poipu from $215 down to $165! Are we crazy to just show up and try to negotiate a more favorable rate? This would be for Poipu where we are staying for a few days before moving on to Princeville (where we have secured a booking). We have our choices narrowed down to two developments: Waikomo Streams or Regency at Poipu Kai. Thanks in advance!

The only problem you might have (besides full occupancy) is that unless there is a management company on site, there may be no one to negotiate with, much less pay for the unit.

I don't know about these buildings, but some condo rentals are done directly with the owners online. You might call in advance to confirm that there is a rental office at each of these, and that they will be open late on Saturday.

That's good advice, Lcuy. Thanks. We've heard that there are some travel desks at the airport where you can make walk-up reservations. Is this correct?

that I don't know...I've never noticed any, but we either stay with friends or have reservations, so its never been an issue. Maybe Auntie Maria will chime in here...

If it was me, I'd wrap up my Poipu reservation ASAP.

I would go ahead and book now. I wouldn't want to waste time in paradise being frustrated driving condo complex to hotel to condo complex trying to get in somewhere.

Just my thoughts!

The Lihue airport is so small, and I don't remember any travel desks in the waiting area, only car rentals across the road. I would make reservations before I left home, so as to not waste time.

If you're lucky, you _might_ be able to get a hotel room without advance notice...as long as you don't care where it is, or how much you'll be charged.

But -- as has been repeated here by others -- condos are not a "walk in" option on Kaua`i. Advance bookings are required, except under the most unusual situtations.

I'm not saying you'll never be able to secure a vacation rental property, but I am saying it will be difficult-to-impossible. I personally wouldn't risk it...or suggest it.

Thanks to the wise advice; though we called to book our condo at 8:00 p.m. EST, the night before our 7:00 a.m. flight from Newark airport! Staying at Regency Condos in Poipu kai. LOVE IT!!! New, clean, dark wood furniture, stainless steel appliances, granite counters. Master bath with enorous walk-in shower and jacuzzi tub. Feels like a really nice beach house. Perfect for our family of 4 (we have two kids, ages 2 1/2 and 3 months). About a 10 mintue walk to Poipu Beach.
