Can We Do This?
Coming from Yellowstone to Mount Rushmore Area. Will stop one night in Deadwood after seeing Devil's Tower. The next day want to leave early and travel to Badlands, see Badlands and then travel to Custer State Park and stay there for our last 3 nights. Is this ok to do in one day or is it too much? Really wanted to spend 3 nights in Custer State Park but also wanted to see the Badlands. Thanks for any help. Gail

Remembering back to an earlier trip, you will indeed be covering alot of miles across Wyoming in one day. We have camped in Custer Pk coming from the East. And once stayed a week to enjoy it with our kids. But of course Badlands was on the way. For you it is a side trip, but not so far away.

It's about 2 hours from Deadwood to Badlands, and then another couple hours from Badlands to Custer. So figure on 4 hours of driving back and forth. That should give you plenty of time to see some of Badlands, but it's up to you if that's enough time or if you'd rather go through it a bit slower.

I'm just jumping in here with a related question... if staying in Custer, is it too far to do a day trip to Badlands and back? I was going to base myself in Custer to do day trips around the area to see everything(Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, caves, etc)
Thanks in advance for your responses. |
The first time we did the Badlands we did it from our base in Custer State Park. We would have had plenty of time in Badlands if we didn't hadn't had a tire problem and spent a lot of time in Rapid City dealing with it.

We used Custer State park for our base and visited Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Mt Rushmore, Rapid City, Badlands, and Mammoth Site. We had 5 days in Custer though. One of my best trips as our reason for going to Custer was to trout fish and we got to soooo much more than just fish.

We had our base in Keystone. We saw Mount Rushmore from our room.I would not stazy in Deadwood. There's nothing to see.You can easily drive on to Keystone. We did everything in two and a half days.If you want to do the caves you'll need more time. We didn't because we've seen so many caves in our country Belgium. Paul
