Can anyone tell me if you walk from Downtown Chicago to the Shedd Aquarium?
We will be staying at the Homewood Suites ...and just trying to do a little pre-planning. Thank you for any help!

You should arrive early at Shedd to avoid long lines. You can walk down Michigan Avenue or Columbus Drive through the middle of Grant Park.
If you want to use public transit, you have a couple options. One is to walk east to Michigan Avenue (through Nordstrom) and catch the Number 146 or 10 bus southbound to the Shedd. A second is to walk one block west to State/Grand and take the Red Line subway toward 95th Street. Exit at Roosevelt and walk east to the Museum Campus.
If you'll be using public transit frequently while you're visiting, day-passes would be a wise investment. A 3-day pass is $14 and allows unlimited rides on all CTA trains and buses. They're available at both airports, CVS and Walgreens pharmacies or the Jewel supermarket on State & Ohio.
For transit info, maps and a trip planner, check the CTA site at www.transitchicago.com. When you're riding buses, there is a number at the bottom of each bus stop sign. If you text ctabus [stop#] to 41411, you'll get a message telling when the next buses are due at that stop.

All of the information that Citylghts gave is good. I would suggest taking the bus. It drops you off right on the Museum campus. The Roosevelt stop on the subway is still a bit of a walk from the aquarium. A beautiful walk through the park but still a long way. It may work for you and the older children but it may be too far for the 6yr old.

We were in Chicago last week, staying at a hotel at State and Ohio (about one block from the Homewood Suites you mentioned).
We walked to/from the Shedd, it was pretty pleasant walking down Lakeshore or Michigan or partly thru the parks (where possible). But temps were mild when we were there (the day prior it had been in the 90's, we had temps in 60's). If it were raining or hot/muggy we'd have hailed a cab for sure.
On the way back we stopped at the Art Institute, which we also enjoyed.
A tip on the Shedd tix -- we *thought* the lines were long when we got there early AM (about half-way down the front steps out front, then a long line once you are inside, probably took 30-40 minutes for us just to buy a ticket), but when we left around noon the line was probably 1,000 people long, well down the plaza. I'd guess it took the end-of-the line folks well over an hour to get to where they could buy a ticket. This was a Friday, not the weekend.
So if doing this again I'd buy the ticket in advance over the internet from the Shedd web site and pick up at will-call, which had no line at all.

The fountain is about a mile north of the Shedd. If you follow the trail that crosses in front of the Field Museum, there's a pedestrian underpass at Lake Shore so you won't have to deal with traffic.
After you spend some time at the fountain, walk a block east on Congress to Michigan Ave and see the Bowman and Spearman sculptures at the gateway to the park.
