Can anyone remember it being this cold in NE?

It hasn't gotten above 10 below in the Green Mts for the last 4 days!

Except for 5 years in the Washington, DC, area, I've lived in New England all my life, and I don't remember it being this cold ever. It is now 30 below with the wind chill factor here in southern New Hampshire...

At least we will get a break this weekend. Temps are supposed to "soar" into the double digits!

It'll be even colder after the Patriots lose to the Colts.

I was born and raised in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (now living in the Champlain Valley) and can say that yes, I remember it being this cold. In college at UVM we had a few days where windchills were in the -70 range. Certainly lots of -20 nights in the Kingdom as well. However, I don't remember it being cold like this for this many days in a row!

BuzzyJ Jan 16th, 2004 09:51 AM

The Patriots are not going to lose to the Colts.

During this cold my son received a college acceptance to a school in Savannah - no doubt in his mind now that he wants to leave the northeast forever.

I've lived in central New Hampshire for 23 years, and this is probably the longest stretch I've seen of constant
minus 20f mornings I can remember. However, I do remember a day about 15 years ago when we got down to -32f, and also the infamous 1980 Christmas Eve when it dropped from 25 above to 25 below in about 8 hours!

Buzzy J has it right. Colts are goin' down, and goin' home UNHAPPY. The Pats rock!!!!!

puddin Jan 16th, 2004 12:28 PM

By the way, I live in Southern NH as well, and the cold is ridiculous! Can't wait til Sunday when it warms up to 20!!!!!! Whoo-hoo!

I'm in southcentral Alaska, on an inlet, and we too have had a long stretch of -20 to -30. It is sure beautiful during the daytime, pastel colors in the sky and the mountain ranges stand out like an oil painting. I'm grateful for my two fireplaces, but I dread seeing the bill this month. Ours is supposed to last a few more days. Some years we are lucky, and get the pineapple express, warm winds from Hawaii. We don't have much traffic to contend with, but power outages do happen from the snow on the lines. Anyway, you Northeasterners have my sympathy!

Thanks, but somehow that makes it seem worse, getting sympathy from Alaska.

Anonymous- The good thing about weather is how fast it changes. Our temp. cold snap(til Monday they say), has kept me going to the gym, burning off winter calories, for our next trip to Hawaii in March:)

There is ice floating in the NY Harbor. I've never seen THAT before.

MightyIsis Jan 17th, 2004 10:16 AM

There is no way the Colts will beat the Patriots says this (nonbitter) Titans fan.

wantsomesun Jan 17th, 2004 03:12 PM

There was so much ice on the Hudson the other day, I was shocked. The ferries to and from NJ had some problems and people had to find other ways to get into the city.

I am from NE originally and have never seen it this cold in NY, really too cold to go outside. The snow we had is still here, kind of unusual, it's usually gone in a few days, and we're getting more snow tonight.

Have to say our "weather cat" predicted this bad winter. Roxie grows a REALLY thick coat when a bad winter is coming and she sure has been right again this year, so check with us next winter and we'll let you know what Roxie says, she is a Russian Blue by the way.

When I was a boy, the words froze when they came out of people's mouths. We would gather them like little ice cubes and bring them in to thaw. Once, when we were having one of those spells, we found a mound of these little ice words in our front yard. But we sure were disappointed when we brought them in, arranged them in a a line, waited for them to thaw, and found out they were French.
