Actually...we're talking books to read on vacation, which is the end result of travel. Please don't turn this into a big flaming negative post--go away now like a good little party-pooper.

Joe Queenan's 'Red Lobster, White Trash and the Blue Lagoon' has to be one of the funniest books I've ever read and is perfect for vacation reading.

Diane Mott Davidson writes a series of culinary mysteries that are Denver-area based...lots of fun.

I say--keep the books coming!

Right on nopartypooper! Who gets to decide when it's enough?? From the number of responses it seems a lot of people are happy to share their favorite reads. Have to say I just finished "Bridget Jones Diary" today at the beach and was it funny! I literally laughed out loud several times and it's been a while since a book could do that for me!

The Eye of the Tiger by Wilbur Smith - the best adventure/suspense book ever written

i can't believe no one has mentioned
THE RED TENT, By Anita Diamant.

absolutely phenomenal.
seconding the Rec for Poisonwood Bible and the bridget jones books

i also like Luanne Rice, her books are light but not trashy, perfect beach reads.

also, anything by Kaye Gibbons, Faulkneresque stories about southern women

currently my family is obsessed with Angels and Demons, don'tknow the author. we are all buying our own copy b/c everyone wants to read it on our vacation next week.

finally, if you liked the caleb carr books, you will LOVE "THE DRESS LODGER"
really good plot, good historical detail but not boring at all.

have fun

Here's another vote for "The Red Tent"--couldn't put it down, and didn't want it to end. Felt the same way about "Folly."

Anything by Anne Rivers Siddon (southern writer) is good beach material. Fault Lines was the first book of hers I read. Just finshed Colony and can't wait to start Up Country. I'd also second Sullivan's Island by Dorothy Frank

Agree with Annie, "Me Talk Pretty One Day" the newest book by David Sedaris is hilarious. He has two or three others that are just as funny.

Also agree with Bookworm about Rosamund Pilcher's books. They're wonderful, character-rich stories.

My personal favorite is "Confederacy of Dunces," which won a Pulitzer in the 70s. It about the adventures of selfish, deluded and tyrannical hotdog vendor Ignatius J. Reilly in his native New Orleans. Very, very funny.
