I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Ontario. The destination was Moosonee/Moose Factory Island - the furthest point north in Ontario you can go on public transportation. It took two and a half days to get there from Detroit, MI counting the short stop on Manitoulin Island (a trip in itself). The folks in Cochrane were wonderful. That's the jumping off point to catch the Polar Bear Express. I just took the day tour with Two Bay Excursions and I highly recommend them. A quick trip around Moosonee and then a lovely jaunt to Moose Factory Island. There is much to see and do there. Next time I'm planning at least four nights. Two Bay Tours is on the web (www.twobay.com). You can also find the Polar Bear Express (Ontario Northland line) on the web as well. What a place to see!

CALGARY
I have lived in Sask.,Kelowna,B.C.,and southern Alberta. In my teens I had said I would always return to the Okanagan(Kelowna) when I started my career. I'm now 25 any couldn't imagine living anywhere else but here. Lots of pros and only one con (weather can suck sometimes, but we get chinooks in winter, sometimes up to 10 degrees above in the middle of winter). Anyways, there is lots do in and around here, and it all depends on when you might be going through here. The best time would be in early July, when we have the Stampede. Banff is only an hour away, and when your in the Rockies, there is enough different hiking/scrambling trails and camping spots to last all spring, summer, and fall.
Then go through the Okanagan in early August (long weekend). Penticton and Kelowna are rocked every year by tons of people (18-28) for what is called an early Peachfest. If you like beaches the best in Penticton is Skaha and Kelowna is Gyro. For bars during that long weekend, Penticton - night moves
Kelowna - Splashes or Gotchas, but be forewarned
go early (before 8:30) or plan on standing in line for about an hour and end up paying $20 cover charge (before 8:30 around $5). Gotta get back to work. Good luck, have fun and drive safe (especially
through the Rockies, near Golden).

Our famiy just returned from a vacation to Canada. Old Quebec City was the highlight. Within the walls is a three hundred year old French village...it is fantastic. Be sure to see Place Royale where the it truly is a step back in time. Quebec is wonderful for giving out travel information (directions, brochures, etc.). Fodors guide on Quebec city is very good. The people were wonderful to us...they are very congenial to "Anglos". There is a boardwalk along the St. Lawrence where street performers do their "thing" each day and evening.
Be sure to take a carriage ride when you arrive...the driver will point out all the interesting things to do and see. It only costs about $57 including tax. Also, outside of Quebec, but only a few minutes down the road, is St. Anne du Beaupre. It is a Basilica and Shrine to St. Anne. Even if you are not Catholic, the architecture and majesty of the Basilica is worth seeing. Have fun!

Can anyone tell me how long it takes to drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Louisbourg, Cape Briton Island? I'm planning to go in about two weeks, flying from Greensboro, NC to Halifax, then renting a car. Also, if I was crazy enough to try DRIVING ALL THE WAY from NC to NS, how many hours would it take? How about from NC to NS by TRAIN? Anybody know? Thanks.

Writing on Stone Provincial Park in Southern Alberta.

Don't miss it. Amazing, beautiful and spiritual. The land forms are sandstone hoodoos, and there are ancient petroglyphs. It is about an hour east of Lethbridge Alberta.
