Can A Vacation Be Dangerous?
 

For the majority of travelers we look for vacations ranging from relaxation to adventure. We rarely think of experiencing danger on a vacation. For example, Cancun and the surrounding areas market to reach and meet the needs of all levels of travelers interest. It is notable that the Cancun area is experiencing an alarming number of tourist deaths and injuries due to safety and security issues.

What a shame. I saw a program many years ago on 60 Minutes, or one of those, about the dangers of the drains in swimming pools, especially for small children. The suction is very strong and can hold a child down or worse..I can't go into the details, its too disgusting. Also, diving boards are very dangerous. The "standards" do not allow for enough flat space before the bottom starts to rise to the shallow area. So, yes, pools can be very dangerous.

In the early days of Cancun, we owned a condo and spent many vacations there. A huge danger are the rip tides on the ocean side of the island. Many people have drowned there and this news is hidden from the press.

I've seen this story before, it's just awful, terribly sad. I'd hope that the Mexico tourist industry would do safety updates on their pools, just as the American pool industry has.

Let's not forget the obvious. The rate of deaths per passenger mile in autos in the U.S. is about 1 per 100 million (ie, if 1 million people take a 100 mile auto journey, the odds are about even that one of them will die). Unless you engage in high risk activities (like base jumping or hang gliding), the most dangerous part of your journey is taking a car to your destination.

Of course, you usually won't make CNN if you die in a car crash, but you're still dead.

Your post suggests that Brent's death was an accident---not. Please take a moment to review and share his website with others. www.brentmidlock.com. This life devastation was caused by gross negligence and incompetence of the operators of the Occidental Grand Xcaret.

Brent's death occured three years ago. Hopefully, the people who maintain the pools have learned from that devastating experience and have taken proper measures so no other family has to go through that.
Just a month or so ago a high school student fell to his death down an elevator shaft in a hotel in Cancun.

I have a question, binx. Was the family somehow compensated (I know there could never be true compensation for such a tragedy, though), and were measures put into place at this resort and others in Mexico because of the awful tragedy?
One would hope so...
